VERNEY. (Luís António) DE RE LOGICA

AD USUM LUSITANORUM ADOLESCENTIUM LIBRI SEX. EDITIO QUARTA AUCTIOR, ET EMENDATIOR. ALOYSII ANTONII VERNEII EQUITIS TORQUATI ARCHIDIACONI EBORENSIS. NEAPOLI MDCCLXIX. (1769).

4.ª Edição rara, como todas as desta obra. A primeira edição foi publicada em Romae: ex typographia Palladis apud Nicolaum, et Marcum Palearinos, 1751; a segunda: Romae: ex Typographia Generosi Salomonii in Platea S. Ignatii, 1757; a terceira: Olisipone: ex typographia Michaelis Rodericii, Rmñi D. Card. patriarchae typographi, 1762;

Id est: Errores Absurditates, Ineptiae Aloysii Antonii Verneii in opere inutili De Re Logica, Pampelone: apud Haeredes de Martinez, bibliopólas in Vico de Navarreria, 1752.

 20x13 cm. xxxii-362 pp. Contemporary full leather binding, with gold lettering tooled on the spine and on the red label.

4th rare edition, like all those of this work. The first edition was published in Romae: ex typographia Palladis apud Nicolaum, et Marcum Palearinos, 1751; the second: Romae: ex Typographia Generosi Salomonii in Platea S. Ignatii, 1757; the third: Olisipone: ex typographia Michaelis Rodericii, Rmñi D. Card. patriarchae typographi, 1762;

This edition is much improved on the first. Verney was always involved in controversy and this work was also contested by the Jesuit Manuel Marques (under the pseudonym Victoriano Censorino) in the work: Furfur Logicae Verneianae. Id est: Errores Absurditates, Ineptiae Aloysii Antonii Verneii in opere inutili De Re Logica, Pampelone: apud Haeredes de Martinez, bibliopólas in Vico de Navarreria, 1752.

Important for the study of the Enlightenment in Portugal and the reception of the contribution to Portuguese culture of the so-called estrangeirados. (Portuguese intellectuals who, at the end of the 17th century and particularly in the 18th century, after having had contact with the progress of the scientific revolution and the philosophy of the Enlightenment abroad, returned to the country).

This work is part of a major project to present the whole of philosophy and theology in a series of separate volumes, which the author set out in his letter to the Marquis of Valencia, but which he was unable to complete, perhaps because of the strong criticism he received that the work lacked quality and originality.

Luís António Verney (Lisbon, 1713 - Rome, 1792) was a writer, educator, philosopher and theologian deeply influenced by Enlightenment ideas. His father was of French origin from the city of León, which contributed greatly to his education and also to his difficulties in adapting to Portuguese society, being one of the most notable examples of the intellectuals known as 'estrangeirados'. He was a Knight of the Order of Christ, Archdeacon of the Metropolitan Church of Évora, a graduate in Theology and a Master of Arts from the University of Évora, and a Doctor of Civil Law from the University of Rome, where he lived for most of his life, from August 1736 until his death. He was Secretary of the Portuguese Legation to the Roman Curia. Queen Maria I appointed him Honorary Member of the Court of the Bureau of Conscience and Orders, by decree of September 11, 1790; he was a Member of the Roman Arcadia under the name of 'Verenio Origiano', and of the Royal Academy of Sciences of Lisbon, elected in 1780.

He wrote many works for teaching purposes in Latin and works of literary criticism and defense of his pedagogical and philosophical ideas in Portuguese, but his most important work, which sparked a prolonged controversy in which a large number of 18th century writers took part, was - O Verdadeiro Método de Estudar, Nápoles, 1748. The violent criticism of his work was due as much to the innovative nature of his ideas at the time as to the uncompromising and even aggressive way in which he set them out.
