In 8.º com [iv], 49, [i] fólios.

Anselmo 972. D. Manuel 191.

Rules of the Benedictine Chapter in Latin language, 1586. Together with: Rules of the Benedictine Chapter in Portuguese language, 1586.

In 8. º (18x13, 5 cm) with [vi], 68 folios; together with [iv], 49 [i] folios. Binding: ¾ calf bound by the end of the 18th Century.

These two first editions of the Benedictine Rules, though published at the same time; they are two different bibliographical specimens. Latin text with the Rules of the Chapter is illustrated with woodcuts, two different images of S. Benedict, on the title and the last folio and a typographical devise also in the last folio. License to print given by Bartholomew Ferreira (the same censor of the poem Lusíadas). Translation of Fr. João Pinto. The Portuguese text of the Rules of the Chapter are illustrated on the last folio or colophon (actually it is a full page “frontispiece” on the verse of last folio). On this engraving the printer used the same intaglio printed at the frontispiece of the first edition of The Lusíadas (pelican head to the left) which is a proof that the intaglio was not lost or damaged between the first and the second edition of the Lusíadas. Copy with marginal old restorations (head and foot of titlepage) for the removal of ownerships.

Anselmo 973. D. Manuel 190. Anselmo 972. D. Manuel 191.
