 In 4.º (21x18 cm). [iv], 112 pags.

Original cardboard binding. Spine with tear, without loss of paper, between the lower and central seam of the quires, and with a label on paper with manuscript title. Slight traces of moth-work on guard sheets, glued to the cardboard.

Untrimmed copy. It presents some quires with acidity proper from the quality of the paper and slight professional restorations between the pages 34 and 62, marginal, slightly affecting the text on pages 44, 45, 46, 52, 56 and 60. Light marginal unrestored holes in the foot of the last three leaves, without affecting the graphic spot.

Third Latin edition of this work. The first Spanish edition of «Brevísima relación de la destrucción de las Indias» was published in 1552. «This is one of the most gruesome books ever written, and one of the boldest works that ever issued from the press. It gives a short account of the cruelties of the Spaniards in each of the colonies, including Jamaica, Trinidad, Florida, Rio de la Plata and Peru.»

Fundamental work in the history of the Spanish colonization of America. The Bishop of Seville, Las Casas, was the first author to report the slaughters and massacres performed by the conquistadors and to defend the rights of American Indians, founding the concept that today we call human rights.

These seventeenth century editions are important because, unlike the original editions in Spanish, they are illustrated, almost always focused on the slavish and torturing attitude of the Iberian powers, the Latin edition being perhaps the most important because it is more widely accepted.

At that time this work was widely disseminated and published in several languages in Central European countries, which did not discover America, but had their own colonizing interests, and used this as propaganda, to downgrade the image of the presence of the Iberian nations as colonizers of America, thus trying to legitimize their own intervention.
