AUCTORE BARONE DE CASTELLO DE PAIVA PHILOSOPH. BACCAL. IN CONINBR. UNIVERS. MEDEC. DOCT. PARIS FACULT. [etc, etc, etc]. OLISIPONE. TYPIS ACADEMICIS. M DCCC LXVII [1867].

In folio.

In folio. 31x24 cm. 168-[i] pp. Paperback. Should be bound.

Illustrated with 2 full-page hors-texte chromolithographed prints , with the representation of shells of various species of molluscs in the form of an illustrated index.

Copy lacking the back cover, handwritten ownership title on the front cover and author's dedication addressed to the Duke of Loulé. Handwritten correction by the author cutting the letter I from the word of the title Insularium Maderensium to Insularum Maderensium.

This work is a treatise in Latin printed at the Royal Academy of Sciences in Lisbon (and for that very reason written in Latin for international dissemination), containing a scientific monograph of all terrestrial, fluvial and lacustrine molluscs of the Madeira Archipelago.

The introduction of the work entitled "Advertencia" is an exhortation to the "science of God", the author considering that the work of the Creator, the omnipotence of the divine Artificer, is beyond human knowledge. The other reason for creating this work was because at that time, according to the author, there was a lack of knowledge about the formation of the tissues and fibres of organic bodies and the ability to vivify matter. To this end the author studied not only the hard parts (the testaceous shells), but also the external habit of these animals and the peculiar circumstances of their habitat. Some of the entries, or scientific records in this work, are discoveries and scientific classifications of new species with collections made by the author himself. This author has an extensive scientific body of work and has carried out similar research in the Canary Islands.

Inocêncio quotes the auto at length and refers to this work, at that time still in print:

«ANTONIO DA COSTA PAIVA, 1. º Baron of Castello de Paiva, graduated Bachelor in Philosophy from the University of Coimbra; Doctor of Medicine from the Faculty of Paris; Professor of the Polytechnic Academy of Porto; Member of the General Council of Public Instruction, Member of the Dramatic Council; Effective member of the Royal Academy of Sciences of Lisbon; Foreign Associate of the Zoological Society of London, of the Society of Natural History of Cassel (Germany), of the Society of Natural Sciences of Strasbourg, of the Botanical Societies of France and of Edimburg, of the Imperial Academy of Medicine of Rio de Janeiro, of the Academies of Medicine and Surgery of Tolosa, Marseille and Montpellier, etc. [...] a native of the city of Porto; and was born in 1806. [...]. I have taken on this task with all the better will, since it is certain that the name of this illustrious contemporary, reputed by foreign scholars such as R. T. Lowe, T. V. Wollaston, Blackwall, C. Bolle, L. Pfeiffer, A. Morelet, H. Crosse, W. Schimper, S. Berthelot, E. Fournier, H. G. Reichenbach fil, W. Hooker, L. P. Arcas, and also praised by some Portuguese naturalists, Messrs J. V. Barbosa du Bocage and B. A. Gomes, with the distinction justly acquired by his writings, and even more by his important practical studies in various branches of Natural History, has until today little to thank in this part to our periodical press.[...] He also has, still waiting for publication, an extensive descriptive monograph, approved by the Royal Academy of Sciences, of the terrestrial and fluvial molluscs of the archipelago of Madeira, adorned with coloured figures, representing some new species discovered by the author in the tours he usually makes annually to that island [of Madeira].".
