An album with magnificent reproductions of the watercolours by Edward Hawke done during his stay in Spain, and interspersed with the description of the depicted places, cities and their routes, as well as ancient and modern history, mainly with the description of his experiences during the Peninsular Wars.

Edward Hawke Locker (1777-1849) was born in Kent, studied in Eton and, in 1824, as Administrator of the Naval Hospital in Greenwich, he opened the Naval Gallery in the Hospital’s Painted Hall. During the military campaigns against Napoleon, he was civil secretary to Edward Pellews during his commissions in the Eastern Indies, North Sea and Mediterranean. In 1813 he stayed in Spain together with Lord John Russell (to whom he dedicates this work). At the same time he worked for the navy as a civilian, Locker did several watercolour paintings, with his works now in the V&A and British Museum.
