Separata da 'Nova Acta Academiae Caesareae Leopoldinae', volume XXXII. Alexander Philipp Maximilian, príncipe de Wied-Neuwied foi um dos maiores naturalistas e etnógrafos do século XIX. Ficou conhecido pelas suas obras "Reise nach Brasilien" e "Reise in das innere Nord-América". O sua grande obra sobre os répteis Verzeichniss der Reptilien, welche auf einer reise im nördlichen America beobachtet wurden', ilustrado com sete gravuras de Bodmer, coloridas manualmente, descrevendo tartarugas e salamandras, foi publicado pouco antes da sua morte em Neuwied, em 3 de Fevereiro 1867 "(Adler p. 22). Carl Bodmer ficou conhecido como o ilustrador de gravuras dos índios norte-americanos.

Alexander Philipp Maximilian, prince of Wied-Neuwied was one of the greatest explorer-naturalists and ethnologists of the 19th century. He is best known for his 'Reise nach Brasilien' and 'Reise in das innere Nord-America'. His major report on the reptiles 'Verzeichniss der Reptilien, welche auf einer reise im nördlichen America beobachtet wurden', illustrated with seven beautifully handcoloured plates of turtles and salamanders by Bodmer, was published shortly before the prince's death, in Neuwied, on 3 February 1867" (Adler p. 22). Carl Bodmer is well known as illustrator of 19th century Native Americans.
