CAVAZZI, Giovanni Antonio. HISTORICAL DESCRIPTION OF THE THREE KINGDOMS: CONGO, MATAMBA, AND ANGOLA,  Milan 1690. Agnelli.

In 8º gr. (de 22x16 cm) [xiv], 784 págs. Illustrated with 1 frontispice. + [xiv] + 1 folding map (21,5 x 27 cm) and 42 engraved plates.

First published in 1687, this is a fundamental work on the Portuguese presence and the missions of Capuchin Friars in Western Africa, with interesting references to the Brazilian history where their ships called on their way to Africa. It was originally published in Italian in 1687 by P. Cavazzi, who lived for 37 years in Congo.

The folding map, enclosed between the opening pages and page 1 of the text, shows the West coast of Africa from the Equator to 16 degrees South latitude and the interior of Africa up to 49 degrees East latitude, showing the central plateau and the rivers that flow into the Zambezi at the current longitude of 22 degrees East (the author hypothetically locates the Great Lakes and the Monomotapa in the area that is presently Zambia). The Atlantic Ocean is mentioned as Southern Ocean or “truly Ethiopic”. The contemporary handwritten abbreviated title on the spine of this copy reads: “Storia de 3. Regni nell’ Ethiopia”. The city of S. Paulo de Luanda is marked as being a big city.

The “Donna Pesce” is described in the text as a mermaid or a Naiad as per descriptions of classical antiquity. Its detailed morphology is described on page 42 next to the plate. The description includes its real observation, as well as the preparation and ingestion of its meat.

The work, through its many illustrations, describes the punishment of crimes and funeral rites (p. 103); the relationship of the black with Europeans (p. 128); the rituals of human mass sacrifices (p. 167); the ivory trade (p. 172); the image of the reception of the friars by the king of Congo (p. 269); the image of the baptism of the King of Angola; the court of Queen Anna Zingha (also known as Nzinga or Njinga) in Luanda (p. 577), etc..

Giovanni Antonio Cavazzi da Montecuccolo (1621–1678) was an Italian Capuchin missionary known for his travels in the 17th century Portuguese Angola and his lengthy account of local history and culture as well as a history of the Capuchin mission there. Cavazzi was a regular student and was almost denied a position in the central African mission, but prevailed thanks to his godliness. He was sent to the Portuguese possessions, arriving at Luanda in 1654. He travelled widely as a chaplain with the Portuguese, those travels include a stay at the court of the king of Pungo Andongo; a trip in 1659 into the central highlands region; a visit in 1660 to the court of Queen Nzinga (or Njinga) in Matamba; and a trip to the Kingdom of Congo. He returned to Nzinga’s court in 1662 and remained there after the queen’s death in 1663. He presided to her funeral and left Matamba in 1665, returning to Italy in 1667. In 1673 he got back to Angola as prefect of the Capuchin mission, and back to Italy in 1677, where he wrote a second biographical account of the Capuchin mission, not published until the 20th Century. He worked in the archives in Italy to round out his history, but The Holy Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith, which had commissioned the work, was reluctant to publish it.

Cavazzi is famous for this descriptive history “Istorica Descrizione de tre regni Congo, Matamba ed Angola”. There are many translations namely a German one in 1694 and a French one in 1732. There is a modern critical edition and Portuguese translation of the book, edited in 1965 in Lisbon by Graziano Saccardo. In 1969, Giuseppe Pistoni discovered the original manuscripts of Cavazzi's work, written in Africa in 1668, amongst the papers of the Araldi Family of Modena. This collection, three bulky manuscripts, was illustrated with vivid watercolours depicting life in Central Africa, and particularly at the court of Queen Nzinga. The illustrations were subsequently published by Ezio Bassani, being the first volume edited and translated by John K. Thornton. In addition to his extensive history, Cavazzi autobiography can be found in both the Araldi manuscripts, the Istorica Descrizione and also in the text of “Vite dei Frati Minori Cappuccini del Ordine del Serafica Padre San Francisco, morti nelle Missioni d'Etiopia dall'anno 1645 sino all'anno 1677.”
