Encadernação da época, inteira de pele, com ferros a ouro na lombada e rolados em esquadrias nas pastas.

Ilustrado com anterrosto e frontispício gravados, uma grande carta geográfica desdobrável da Península Ibérica, outra da Península em formato pequeno na página 1, 1 mapa, 1 gravura com a vista de Barcelona (ambos desdobráveis) e com dezenas de gravuras impressas no texto abertas em chapa de metal retratando localidades ibéricas.

A parte consagrada a Portugal contém carta geográfica do país, plantas de Vila Nova de Cerveira e de Braga, vista de Coimbra, cinco gravuras de Lisboa, três de Belém, uma de Cascais a Belém, planta de Setúbal, vista de Évora, plantas de Extremoz e de Elvas, vista de Arronches, planta de Olivença, vistas de Vila Viçosa e de Ferreira do Alentejo.

A parte quinta contém cinco gravuras relativas à Inquisição, mais uma representando uma corrida de touros e ainda uma outra relativa à partida da Infanta D. Catarina para a Inglaterra.

Obra famosa com uma pormenorizada descrição da Península Ibérica estruturada em cinco partes. A primeira descreve o norte de Espanha. A segunda parte descreve a região central, incluindo Madrid e a região fronteiriça com Portugal. A terceira parte descreve o sul de Espanha e a costa mediterrânica, incluindo a Catalunha. A quarta parte é dedicada a Portugal, sendo descritas as principais regiões e 38 localidades, incluindo, Lisboa, Porto, Coimbra, Aveiro, Belém e Sintra. A quinta parte contém descrições de aspectos característicos de Portugal e Espanha, onde se destacam a relação das ordens militares e uma descrição da Inquisição e dos seus procedimentos incluindo os Autos de Fé.

Primeira edição e única em holandês. Foram impressas mais duas edições de menor forma, ambas traduzidas para francês nas quais foram utilizados os mesmos desenhos.

Pieter van der Aa (Leiden 1659-1733) começou como aprendiz de um vendedor de livros com nove anos de idade e iniciou seu próprio negócio como editor de livros aos vinte e três anos. Como editor produziu uma obra variada e prolífica, centrada na produção de mapas e atlas. As suas publicações incluem um 'Atlas Nouveau', completado por volta de 1710, e a famosa 'Galerie Agreable du Monde', com 66 partes em 27 volumes, completada em 1729. Esta última obra contém mais de três mil mapas. As partes 61 a 63 lidam apenas com o continente africano. Pieter van der Aa foi editor e comerciante bem sucedido. As edições têm grande qualidade estilística e decorativa, correspondendo ao gosto do público da época. Muitos de seus mapas foram gravados por cartógrafos flamengos, tais como Luiken, Goeree e Stoopendael.

Contemporary full leather binding, with gilt tools on the spine and blind tooled frames on the boards.

Illustrated with engraved half title page and frontispiece, a large fold-out geographical chart of the Iberian Peninsula, another of the Peninsula in small format on page 1, 1 map, 1 engraving with a view of Barcelona (both fold-outs) and with dozens of engravings printed in the text etched in metal plate depicting Iberian localities.

The part devoted to Portugal contains a geographical map of the country, plans of Vila Nova de Cerveira and Braga, a view of Coimbra, five engravings of Lisbon, three of Belém, one from Cascais to Belém, a plan of Setúbal, a view of Évora, plans of Extremoz and Elvas, a view of Arronches, a plan of Olivença, views of Vila Viçosa and Ferreira do Alentejo.

The fifth part contains five engravings relating to the Inquisition, plus one depicting a bullfight and another relating to the departure of the Infanta D. Catarina for England.

Famous work with a detailed description of the Iberian Peninsula structured in five parts. The first describes northern Spain. The second part describes the central region, including Madrid and the border region with Portugal. The third part describes southern Spain and the Mediterranean coast, including Catalonia. The fourth part is dedicated to Portugal, describing the main regions and 38 locations, including Lisbon, Porto, Coimbra, Aveiro, Belém and Sintra. The fifth part contains descriptions of characteristic aspects of Portugal and Spain, including a list of military orders and a description of the Inquisition and its procedures, including the Auto-da-Fé(ritual of public penance carried out between the 15th and 19th centuries of condemned heretics and apostates imposed by the Spanish, Portuguese, or Mexican Inquisition as punishment and enforced by civil authorities. Its most extreme form was death by burning).

First and unique edition in Dutch. Two smaller editions were printed, both translated into French and in which the same drawings were used.

Pieter van der Aa (Leiden 1659-1733) began as an apprentice to a book seller at the age of nine and started his own business as a book publisher at the age of twenty-three. As a publisher he produced a varied and prolific work, centred on the production of maps and atlases. His publications include an 'Atlas Nouveau', completed around 1710, and the famous 'Galerie Agreable du Monde', with 66 parts in 27 volumes, completed in 1729. The latter work contains more than three thousand maps. Parts 61 to 63 deal only with the African continent. Pieter van der Aa was a successful publisher and merchant. The editions have great stylistic and decorative quality, corresponding to the taste of the public of the time.
