20: Ptolomeu? 21: Protógenes.

The image reproduces a detail of the large fresco painted by Raphael on a wall of the room, originally intended for the library, to represent the allegory of the rational Truth. The scene consisting on the figures of Plato (portrait in the likeness of Leonardo) and Aristotle whose actions indicate the respective fields of investigation, the pivot of classical thought: the ideal world and the earthly world. Their proximity and their eyes allude to the possibility of a reconciliation between the two philosophical systems. Philosophers and scholars, arranged in the grand unified space according to a rhythmic spatial scan that leaves you free gestures, representing the current dialectic of rational thought. The choice of the School of Athens reinforces and explains, with the evocative power of the image, the meaning of the term "synergy", used here to mean the place of confrontation of ideas working to achieve the same end. (text based in Dra. Elena Villani, Art Historian).

The School of Athens, or Scuola di Atene in Italian, is one of the most famous frescoes by the Italian Renaissance artist Raphael. It was painted between 1509 and 1510 as a part of Raphael"s commission to decorate with frescoes the rooms now known as the Stanze di Raffaello, in the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican. Commentators have suggested that nearly every great Greek philosopher can be found in the painting, but determining which are depicted is difficult, since Raphael made no designations outside possible likenesses, and no contemporary documents explain the painting. The identities of some of the philosophers in the picture, such as Plato or Aristotle, are certain. Beyond that, identifications of Raphael’s figures have always been hypothetical.

A more comprehensive list of proposed identifications is given below: 1: Zeno of Citium 2: Epicurus Possibly. 3: unknown (believed to be Raphael) 4: Boethius or Anaximander or Empedocles? 5: Averroes 6: Pythagoras 7: Alcibiades or Alexander the Great? 8: Antisthenes or Xenophon or Timon? 9: Raphael 10: Aeschines or Xenophon? 11: Parmenides? 12: Socrates 13: Heraclitus 14: Plato 15: Aristotle (Giuliano da Sangallo) 16: Diogenes of Sinope 17: Plotinus 18: Euclid or Archimedes with students 19: Strabo or Zoroaster? 20: Ptolemy? 21: Protogenes.
