This work of Vignola is one of the most published books in architectural history and amongst the most influential ever written, due to the clarity of the author"s practical system for constructing columns in the five classical orders. After this studies we can easily distinguished the classical styles from one another by their expression in the columns as Tuscan, Doric, Ionic, Corinthian, and Composite. The first edition, published in 1562, contained only the first 32 plates. Vignolo was one of the three great architects of the Italian Renaissance alongside Serlio and Palladio. He worked in Italy and France, under the patronage of the powerful Farnese family, Pope Julius III, and King Francis I of France at Fontainebleau, but is best known for his work with Michelangelo on St. Peter"s Basilica in Rome.
