 2 volumes. 30x22 cm. xliv-389 and 453 pages.

Contemporary bindings in full leather with raised bands, gilt tools and red labels on the spines. Dry tools on the pastedowns.

Illustrated in the text and hors-texte, containing an appendix with reproductions of maps printed on coated paper (captions with references to the text pages of the two volumes).

Work of great erudition on the Portuguese contributions, throughout the centuries of four hundred and five hundred, to the increase of human geographical knowledge, focusing on the sources and biographical paths of the figures of one of the most brilliant periods of the History of Portugal.

The author exhaustively describes the four periods or Schools of Portuguese cartography, correlating them with the emergence, evolution, apogee and decline of national nautical science, while appreciating the scientific, literary and political value of various letters and works written by Portuguese, foreign and anonymous authors.

This is one of the most notable works on the subject, only updated in the 1960s and largely retaining the biggest share of the relevance of the presented theses.
