Rara 8ª edição, Inocêncio não regista, e não está registada nos principais catálogos de livreiros e leilões. A 1ª edição foi publicada anónima em 1806, a 2ª foi editada no Rio de Janeiro, em 1812, a 3ª em 1813, a 4ª  em 1814, a 5ª em 1815, a 6ª em 1817 e a 7ª em 1826.

A presente edição tem a menção de 5ª edição por não contar com a do Rio de Janeiro de 1812 e com as de Lisboa de 1814 e de 1826.

É uma das mais populares peças de teatro portuguesas e foi constantemente reeditada até aos nossos dias.

Tragédia em verso sobre a célebre história de Inês de Castro, foi muito admirada por Almeida Garrett. Escrita em 1798, obteve um prémio da Academia das Ciências em Maio de 1799. A Biblioteca nacional de Portugal possui o manuscrito apresentado à Academia. A cena da coroação, acrescentada à obra pelos editores, é da autoria de Nicolau Luís.

Obra inovadora que se enquadra na transição para a literatura romântica, com ambiente terrífico e um estilo mais violento que as anteriores peças de teatro, usando com frequência imagens assustadoras e sangrentas e apresentando a morte de Inês em cena.

Foi traduzida para francês por Ferdinand Denis em 1823 e para alemão por Alexandre Wittich em 1844. Actualmente tem sido estudada também sob a perspectiva dos estudos feministas.

João Baptista Gomes, júnior (Porto, ? - 1803) foi contabilista em empresas comerciais e faleceu novo. É autor das traduções de duas tragédias de escritores franceses: Fayel, 1798 e Os Macabeos, 1803.

Rare 8th edition, Inocêncio does not mention, and is not registered in the main booksellers' and auctions' catalogues. The 1st edition was published anonymously in 1806, the 2nd edition was published in Rio de Janeiro in 1812, the 3rd edition in 1813, the 4th edition in 1814, the 5th edition in 1815, the 6th in 1817 and the 7th edition in 1826.

The present edition is mentioned as the 5th edition because it does not include the Rio de Janeiro edition of 1812 and the Lisbon editions of 1814 and 1826. It is one of the most popular Portuguese plays and has been constantly reprinted up to the present day.

Tragedy in verse about the celebrated story of Inês de Castro, it was much admired by Garrett. Written in 1798, it won a prize from the Academy of Sciences in May 1799. The Portuguese National Library has the manuscript presented to the Academy. The coronation scene, added to the work by the publishers, is by Nicolau Luís.

Innovative work that already fits in the transition to Romantic literature, with terrifying atmosphere and a more violent style than the previous plays, often using frightening and bloody images and featuring the death of Inês in the scene.

Translated into French by Ferdinand Denis in 1823 and into German by Alexandre Wittich in 1844. Currently it has also been studied from the perspective of feminist studies.

João Baptista Gomes, junior (Porto ? - 1803) He was an accountant in commercial companies and died young. He is the author of the translations of two tragedies by French writers: Fayel, 1798 and the Maccabees, 1803.
