Encadernação do século XVIII inteira de pele. Nervos e ferros a ouro na lombada, com título gravado a ouro sobre rótulo preto, etiqueta com quota de biblioteca do livro. Corte das folhas carminado.

Ilustrado no texto com xilogravuras com o retrato do autor e no início de cada um dos doze textos em prosa e dos doze textos em verso.

Folha de rosto com marca do impressor. Texto impresso em belos e nítidos caracteres redondos nas partes em prosa e em caracteres itálicos nas partes escritas em verso. Ornamentado com cabeção alegórico e iniciais decoradas.

Exemplar com assinatura de posse rasurada na folha de rosto e anotações manuscritas coevas na folha 56v e 57r; no verso da folha 132, que está em branco, tem duas marcas de posse com carimbos oleográficos, um deles brasonado.

Célebre e paradigmática obra poética e narrativa que se desenvolve em ambiente bucólico.

O que torna este poema tão original é o facto de Sannazaro ter optado por escrevê-lo em italiano, em vez de latim, a língua mais usada em literatura na época. Esta obra exerceu grande influência em autores dos séculos XVI e XVII, como William Shakespeare,  Marguerite de Navarre, Jorge de Montemayor, ou John Milton. É considerado o primeiro livro da Renascença italiana, tendo tido mais de 66 edições, só em Itália, durante o século XVI.

Illustrated in text with woodcut engravings, one being the portrait of the author and others at the beginning of each of the twelve prose texts and of the twelve verse texts.

Printer’s device on title page. The text is printed in beautiful round characters on the prose parts and in Italic on the poems. Decorated with allegoric head band and decorated capital letters.

Copy with erased ownership title on title page and contemporary handwritten notes on the back of folio 56 and front of folio 57; on the back of the blank folio 132 there are two stamps, one of them with a coat of arms.

What makes this work so original is the fact that Sannazaro chose to write it in Italian instead of Latin, the most used language in literature at the time. This work influenced several authors of the 16th and 17^th century, like William Shakespeare, Marguerite de Navarre, Jorge de Montemayor, or John Milton. It is considered the first book of the Italian Renaissance, having had, just in Italy, over 66 editions in the 16th century.
