CAMÕES. (Luís de) THE LUSIAD OR, THE DISCOVERY OF INDIA.

AN EPIC POEM. TRANSLATED FROM THE ORIGINAL PORTUGUESE OF LUIS DE CAMÖENS. BY WILLIAM JULIUS MICKLE. THE THIRD EDITION. VOL. I [+VOL. II]. DUBLIN: PRINTED BY GRAISBERRY AND CAMPBELL, FOR JOHN ARCHER. MDCCXCI. [1791].

Obra em 2 volumes. In 8º gr.

A chart of the voyage of Gama and the Portuguese Discoveries".

2 volumes. Contemporary full leather binding, gilt at spine, red labels, and gilt tooled frames on the boards.

Illustrated with a portrait of William Julius Mickle (engraved by Mannin, drawing by Humphry); and with a folding map (26x38 cm) with the title: "A chart of the voyage of Gama and the Portuguese Discoveries".

Copy with handwritten bibliographic note at the half title on the first volume.

Volume one consists of: half title, engraved portrait of the translator (engraving by J. Mannin, after a drawing by Mr Humphry), title page; 6 pages of List of Subscribers; 391 printed pages; a map "A Chart of The Voyage of Gama, and the Portuguese discoveries" on page 36; another title page followed by 83 pages containing the beginning of the poem. Volume 2 consists of the title page followed by 507 printed pages which complete the poem.

Mickle employs ABAB couplets, whereas Camões used ottava rima, an ABABABCC form. He also took a few liberties with the text. Mickle"s footnotes are worth consulting for the wealth of information on the classical references, as well as Portuguese history.

The author, Luis de Camões, is considered the Portuguese Shakespeare, and the Lusiads the Portuguese national epic, much in the way as Virgil’s Aeneid was for the Ancient Romans, as well as Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey for the Ancient Greeks. It was first printed in 1572, three years after the author returned from the Indies. The Lusiads were first published in Lisbon in 1572, (there was a Spanish translation in 1580 by Gomez de Tapia, Salamanca, and Benito Caldera, Alcalá de Henares). Written in Homeric style, the poem focuses mainly on a fantasized interpretation of the Portuguese voyages of the Discoveries during the 15th and 16th Centuries.
