PROCESSIONÁRIO DO USO DE JOSEPHA DE BELEM. SÉC. XV -XVI [MANUSCRITO ANTIFONÁRIO MUDEJAR ILUMINADO] - ANTIPHONARY. 15th / 16th CENTURY MUDEJAR ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT

S/L. [Portugal] S/d. [ca. 1400-1500].

In 8.º de 15.5x11 cm.

ANTIPHONARY. 15th / 16th CENTURY MUDEJAR ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON PARCHMENT - IBERIAN PLAINCHANT PROCESSION BOOK FROM DAME JOSEPHA DE BELLEM.

N.p. [Portugal] N.d. [1400-1500].

In 8º. 15.5x11 cm. 3 unnumbered folios + 65 numbered folios.

Binding: contemporary full calf on wooden boards. Blind and vanished gilt tools, slightly worn, with some professional restaurations, especially on spine. Metal clasps with the strips missing - as per the traces left of the strips they were probably made of red velvet. Gilt edges.

Provenance of the book: it presents the ex-libris of the António Capucho’s collection on the back endpaper. This collection was the largest of the 20th century for this type of books.

Illustrated with 9 large illuminated capital letters [4.5x4.5 cm] and 41 smaller, also illuminated, capital letters [22x2 cm]. These beautifully coloured and illuminated capital letters are all laminated with thick golden leaf, and are decorated with floral and animal (mainly birds) motifs. The larger capital letters stand out due to their perfection and beauty. The illuminations are edged by floral motifs dotted in Iberian style. The first large capital letter depicts a palm tree evoking the Palm Sunday.

The illuminations were made by a high skilled illuminator and were edged in the margins of the leaves with highly detailled drawings (filigree) depicting European and exotic birds, trees, flowers, butterflies and other insects.

Musical notation: 5 line scores with five musical scores per page, written in black and white ink, together with the lyrics in Latin, written by the same hand. The index appears before the title page and its last line includes the title of the last chapter in Portuguese (Officio dos finados), however the lyrics are in Latin.

Collation description: Pagination of the text in red Roman numerals. It has 3 unnumbered initial folios: the first is glued to the endpaper of the binding. The second is a loose endpaper. Both present contemporary musical notations, one titled “Baixa” and the other “Tiple J”. The back of the second folio is blank. The front of the third folio is also blank and in the back it has the index of the work written by the same hand of the other folios in the book. Next, there is an illuminated title page, being the title of the work in the centre: «Dominica in ramis palmaru[m] cãntos inponate istã[m] ãnã[m] sequente[m] du[m] ab[...]tis se ramu[m] obtolerit aña».

The body of the text (numbered) is composed of 4 folio gatherings, with the exception of the first unnumbered gathering with 2 free folios and one glued folio. A blank sheet has presumably existed. The last gathering contains 3 folios and ends with the expression “Laus Deo”, thus proving it is complete. The folio glued to the endpaper is possibly the fourth of this gathering.

Apostils along the text: some late notes (though contemporary, since they explain to the reader what to do during the ritual) written in Old Portuguese and also some contemporary musical notations.
