EARLY PHOTOGRAPHIC ARCHIVE - BRITISH CEYLON - 1910-1913.

Collection of 153 glass stereographs (VERASCOPE and GLYPHOSCOPE size; 10.7x4.3 cm) placed into 3 original wooden boxes, contemporary handwritten, with title and dates. Together with the original photo stereo camera and the stereo viewer GLYPHOSCOPE RICHARD in Bakelite and metal.

This stereoscopic collection gathers the images of a sea voyage to Ceylon; houses and plantations in Ceylon (cocoa, rubber, and tea farms); several images of the street life in the cities of Colombo and Candy; the daily life of a British land owners family with their dogs, horses, cars, bowling, and tennis matches; many landscape panoramas; Buddhist Temples and Dutch churches; cottages and bungalows; among other themes. Some shots were taken in England in 1910, prior to the voyage, and include the funeral of Edward VII (laying in state on the cathedral). The pictures (slides) are all snapshots, and only 1/3 (ca. 45 photos) are technically correct. All the others are dully taken, showing underexposure, overexposure, shutter malfunctions, damages in one of the 2 twin frames, thumbed during development process, and other minor damages.

The original photo stereo camera and the stereo viewer GLYPHOSCOPE RICHARD is composed of 2 adjustable modules [Camera + Viewer] coming together with 2 slide cartridges for the viewer and 2 negative cartridges for the camera.

Packed into an original heavy duty leather case with the brand name on top.

Size/dimensions:

Leather case for the camera: 14x12x7 cm.

Wooden boxes (archives) 18.5x12x6 cm.

The photo camera (i.e. the adjustable shutter module that reverses the viewer into a photo camera) has a 3 speed shutter, a trigger, and a collapsible viewfinder.

The Verascopes or Glyphoscopes of Jules Richard were manufactured during nearly sixty years. This small camera allowed to take stereo photographs. The frontal metal can be easily removed, and the ebonite or Bakelite body is then transformed into a stereoscope, after the back panel is removed.

This rare collection of images, together with its original camera, is a real frozen in time museum item. The photos of Ceylon, now Sri Lanka, are one of the first reports of the daily life, and a candid capture of the surrounding areas of the house plantation, the factory, the fields, the roads, the transportation, landscapes, among others.

Index of written subtitles on the glass plates.
