 In folio. 29.5x20.5 cm. [72], 856 pp.

Contemporary limp parchment binding with handwritten title on spine. Renewed endpapers. Contemporary red edges.

Text printed in two columns. Illustrated with a large woodcut engraved vignette on title page, representing the insignia of the Society of Jesus, and hundreds of woodcut decorated capital letters throughout the text. All pages have a double frame around the text.

It has to handwritten ex-libris on title page (faded and not affecting the graphics of the page): one partially unreadable and erased 'Pertence a la libreria de los de los Augustinhos Descalços de Vall[...?]'; the other 'Fr. Manuel de [...?] es de los Aug.º Descalcos de Madrid,1610'.

First edition of a very rare work printed by Manuel Lyra in Évora, probably at the University founded by the Jesuits in the 16th century. Lyra also printed the famous edition of the Lusiades known as “Piscos” edition.

It contains a dedication to Cardinal Odoardo Farnesio [grandson of King D. Manuel I of Portugal?]; the eulogies of the author by Fernando Rebelo S. J., Chancelor of the University of Évora, where it is referred that the author died during the printing of the work; and a poem praising the author “Manuel Pimenta S. J. famous Poet”. It also contains the Inquisition licences signed by Fr. Manuel Coelho; the licence of Évora’s Archbishop D. Teotónio [de Bragança]; the release licence by Damião de Aguiar et al.; and the licence of the Provincial of the Society of Jesus by Cristovão de Gouveia.

This is an essay on the interpretation of the Bible, mainly on its most mystical and symbolic part: the Apocalypse. It is a rather extensive work with interpretations of this part of the bible, as well as the study of the Hebrew words and sentences, presenting some chapters on the Antichrist. It also refers the history of Europe at the time.

Father Braz Viegas was a Portuguese Jesuit born in Évora in 1554 and his work is until today recognised as valuable Reading. According to Palau this work had over ten editions until 1617.
