Exemplar n.º 42 de uma tiragem de 500 com a chancela do professor Martim de Albuquerque. Este exemplar não apresenta o conjunto de quatro estampas soltas que fazia parte da edição, e que reproduziam gravuras da obra.

A obra original contém uma folha de rosto seguida de um fólio com o retrato de Wellington, 2 páginas com a lista de subscritores, 1 fólio com dedicatória impressa do autor ao Duque de Wellington e 20 páginas com a descrição das gravuras e informação acerca das batalhas e dos locais retratados. Seguem-se 19 fólios com 18 gravuras e um mapa com o esquema de acção da Batalha de Vigia de la Barrosa. Segue a lista das gravuras:

O fac-símile inclui quatro páginas não numeradas com a tradução integral para português do frontispício e da dedicatória ao Conde de Wellington, e algumas 'Palavras prévias' de Maria Leonor Machado de Sousa, directora do Instituto da Biblioteca Nacional e do Livro. Tem ainda, no final, oito páginas com as traduções integrais para português das descrições das gravuras. A tradução é da responsabilidade de Maria Helena Rodrigues de Carvalho.

A cópia integral da obra baseia-se no exemplar colorido pertencente a Duarte de Sousa e à data já incluído nas colecções da Biblioteca Nacional.

Este trabalho ilustra duplamente (em texto e gravura) um período crucial da história Portugal: as invasões francesas e a consequente Guerra Peninsular, onde as acções das forças militares britânicas e portuguesas refletem um dos períodos em que a velha aliança luso-britânica brilhou.

Henry L’Évêque (Genebra, 1769 - Roma, 1832) foi um gravador e pintor paisagista. Constitui exemplo paradigmático dos artistas viajantes, repórteres de acontecimentos, ambientes e costumes que, numa cadência aventureira, cruzavam a Europa no período conturbado do final do século XVIII. Visitou recorrentemente Portugal, tendo mesmo integrado o exército britânico. Esta é a sua obra mais conhecida, e demonstra a sua admiração pelo herói da Guerra Peninsular. As estampas que, por indicação da imprensa, parecem ter saído avulsas, são águas-tinta do próprio l’Évêque e de Bartolozzi, Heath, Vendramini, Filter Comte e Schiavonetti.

Copy 042/500 of a print run under the seal of Professor Martim de Albuquerque. This copy does not have the set of four loose prints that were part of the edition and are still present in some copies. The prints in question are repetitions of engravings already in the work.

The original work contains a title page, followed by a folio with Wellington´s portrait, 2 pages with the list of subscribers, 1 folio with L´Evêque´s dedication to the Duke of Wellington, 20 pages with the description of the engravings and information about the battles or places depicted. They are followed by 19 folios with the 18 engravings with the above-mentioned description, plus a map with the scheme of action of the Battle of Vigia de la Barrosa, which is not listed in the previous descriptions. The list of engravings with description is as listed above in the Portuguese section:

The facsimile features 4 unnumbered pages, with the frontispiece and dedication to the then Duke of Wellington, translated entirely into Portuguese, and some 'Preliminary Words' by Maria Leonor Machado de Sousa, Director of the Institute of the National Library and Book.

It is followed by the complete copy of the original work, the coloured copy belonging to Duarte de Sousa and by then already included in the collections of the National Library, 8 pages with the complete translations into Portuguese of the descriptions of the engravings contained in the work and four final pages containing the credits and information about the print run. The translation is the responsibility of Maria Helena Rodrigues de Carvalho.

This work by L´Éveque, doubly illustrates (in text and engraving) a crucial period of our history, the French invasions and the consequent Peninsular War, and the actions of the Anglo-Portuguese army, in one of the periods when the old Anglo-Portuguese Alliance functioned most effectively.

Henri l’Évêque (Geneva, 1769 - Rome, 1832) was an engraver and landscape painter who visited Portugal several times and even served in the British army. This is his best-known work and it shows his admiration for the hero of the Peninsular War. The prints which, by press indication, seem to have come out separately, are watercolours by l´Éveque himself and by Bartolozzi, Heath, Vendramini, Filter Comte and Schiavonetti.
