This masterpiece of world literature of all times has found a vast number of readers since its first edition and since that time has exerted a profound influence on culture, thought and the arts throughout the world. The figures of its two main characters are universally recognised. The universality of the work is rooted in the authenticity with which it draws its characteristics from a visceral knowledge and experience of Spanish culture. For a long time seen as a demolishing criticism of chivalric romances, modern criticism, on the contrary, has come to recognise in the work a tribute to these romances, which have had a strong influence on peninsular culture.

Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra (Alcalá de Henares 1547 - Madrid 22-04- 1616) Spanish novelist, poet and playwriter is one of the great literary geniuses of all time and besides his masterpiece he wrote many other works such as short stories, short novels, drama and poetry that alone would already make him one of the greatest Spanish writers.

His life was very difficult and adventurous. After a duel, in 1569, he fled to Rome, in 1571 he participates heroically in the Naval Battle of Lepanto, where he is seriously wounded, leaving his left hand disabled. In 1575 he is captured by Algerian pirates, and remains in captivity until 1581. Between 1581 and 1583 he lived in Lisbon to be close to King Philip II and the Court, in 1587 he is appointed Royal Commissioner to deal with the supply of the Invincible Armada, which readied itself in Lisbon and in 1597 he was imprisoned for debts.

In his works he shows in several steps his admiration for Portugal and the Portuguese and his description and praise of Lisbon are very famous.
