A mancha gráfica apresenta as marcas da chapa de impressão e pequenos restauros na linha central do mapa.

Mapa, não colorido, gravado em chapa de metal e proveniente do Atlas “Geographia de Ptolomeu”, impresso em Veneza, provavelmente em 1598 (dada a menção à viagem de Giacomo de Flores iniciada em 1583 na descrição em italiano no verso do mapa).

O mapa está orientado a Oeste e cobre toda a área compreendida entre o Rio da Prata e a foz do Rio Amazonas (Marannon F.[lumen]). Não existem muito mais detalhes sobre o interior, excepto a imagem de um impressionante vulcão no meio do continente.

Este exemplar apresenta nativos antropófagos cozinhando a perna de um homem num espeto (o que apenas ocorre nas edições posteriores a 1574) encimado pela legenda Gli indi natij di questi paesi mangiano carne humana [Os índios nativos destes países comem carne humana].

Este mapa (um dos primeiros mapas do Brasil de que se tem conhecimento) foi impresso em 1561 na primeira edição do Atlas efectuada pelo próprio Ruscelli. No mesmo ano V. Valgrisi faz uma nova edição e uma outra no ano seguinte (1562). O Atlas foi postumamente editado em 1574 tendo sido utilizada uma nova chapa para este mapa já com a imagem dos índios antropófagos. Esta chapa foi utilizada nas edições que se seguiram e finalmente em 1599 foi aberta uma terceira chapa.

Girolamo Ruscelli (Aquileia, 1500 - 1566) foi um humanista editor e cartógrafo que exerceu a sua actividade em Veneza no início do século XVI. Na área da cartografia, Ruscelli é conhecido pela sua importante revisão da Geographia de Ptolomeu, baseando o seu trabalho na versão aumentada de Gastaldi de 1548 e adicionando 27 novos mapas “ptolomaicos” à sua versão italiana.

Map, uncoloured, engraved in metal plate and from the Atlas 'Geographia de Ptolomeu', printed in Venice, probably in 1598 (given the mention of Giacomo de Flores"s voyage started in 1583 in the Italian description on the back of the map).

The map is oriented to the west and covers the whole area between the River Plate and the mouth of the Amazon River (Marannon F.[lumen]). There are not many more details about the interior, except the image of an impressive volcano in the middle of the continent.

This specimen shows native anthropophagous people cooking a man"s leg on a skewer (which only occurs in the editions after 1574) topped by the legend Gli indi natij di questi paesi mangiano carne humana [The native Indians of these countries eat human flesh].

This map (one of the first known maps of Brazil) was printed in 1561 in the first edition of the Atlas made by Ruscelli himself. In the same year V. Valgrisi makes a new edition and another one in the following year (1562). The Atlas was posthumously edited in 1574 and a new plate was used for this map with the image of the anthropophagous Indians. This plate was used in the following editions and finally in 1599 a third plate was opened.

Girolamo Ruscelli (Aquileia, 1500 - 1566) was a humanist editor and cartographer who worked in Venice in the early 16th century. In the field of cartography, Ruscelli is known for his important revision of Ptolemy"s Geography, basing his work on Gastaldi"s enlarged version of 1548 and adding 27 new 'ptolemaic' maps to his Italian version.
