Trabalho baseado no “Troye"s map of the Transvaal or S.A.

O seu trabalho no local forneceu os antecedentes para as suas "Notes on mine surveying, with special reference to the Transvaal", publicadas no Transactions of the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy para 1900-1901.

1 map of 270x243 cm, formed by 9 folding sheets of 90x81 cm., each folded in a 20x11 cm format. With individual cover in waterproof khaki color canvas. printed with the general title, the number of the sheet, the contents, and the editors. On the back of the cover is the inscription of the plate engravers, Waterlow Brothers, with their address in Johannesburg. Properly packed in a cardboard box of 21x12x5,5 cm., lined with the same canvas of the covers, with the inscription of the title at the top, the author of the compilation, a scheme of the sheets for the total map and the editors. Just as the covers, on the back has the inscription of Waterlow Brothers.

The nine maps when mounted together on a surface show the entire territory of the Transvaal Colony having in the upper left corner a smaller map of the entire colony with railway lines and post offices.

Detailed map, contains information of railway and postal routes, including information on diamonds, gold and coal mining district. The railway line from Pretoria to Johannesburg continues in the territory of Mozambique until Lourenço Marques (present-day Maputo).

This topographic map was also the first complete geological map of the Transvaal. The map was compiled by Boddam, while his geological information was revised and edited by Troye.

Work based on 'Troye"s map of the Transvaal or S.A. Republic' (1:500 000, in 6 sheets), lithographed in Switzerland and published in six colors in Pretoria. It was the first topographical map of the Transvaal and by far the most complete and accurate map of the territory produced up to that time. It used farm diagrams and records from the inspector general"s office to map farm boundaries and list farm names, while additional information was also obtained from F.H. Jeppe"s 1889 map and provided by R.K. Loveday and others.

Gustav A. Troye, surveyor, cartographer and consultant engineer, was educated in Germany and the Camborne School of Mines in Cornwall. He emigrated to the Cape Colony in 1877 at the age of 17 and fought as a volunteer in the Gaika-Gcaleka War (Ninth Frontier War) of 1877–78 and the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879. In 1882 he settled in the Republic of South Africa (Transvaal) and during 1884-1889 worked in the office of the Inspector General in Pretoria. He moved to Johannesburg in 1889. From 1892 to 1896 Troye was in charge of the Department of Mine Research of the Barnato Group (JCI). His on-site work provided the background to his "Notes on mine surveying, with special reference to the Transvaal", published in the Transactions of the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy for 1900-1901. During 1897 and 1898, he traveled through Australasia and North America, visiting the main mines in these regions. After the Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902) he was a consultant engineer in Johannesburg until 1913 and for some time was part of the Johannesburg City Council.

Captain L.M. Boddam (or Boddam-Whetham) (Lionel Manning Boddam-Wetham) was a British army officer who served in the Bethuen Mounted Infantry during the Anglo-Boer War (1899–1902) and was wounded near Lindley in the Orange Free State on 31 December 1900. He later served in World War I (1914-1918).

Boddam, with the help of G.A. Troye, compiled Troye"s new map of the Transvaal Colony (including Swaziland) which was published in Johannesburg by Crocott and Sherry since 1902. This map was compiled from agricultural and geological surveys and other information by Boddam, while geological information was reviewed and edited by Troye.

Waterlow Brothers is curiously originated from Waterlow & Sons. Waterlow and Sons Limited was a major global engraver of currency, post-mail stamps, share bonds and securities certificates based in London, Watford and Dunstable in England.

It has its origins in the business of James Waterlow, who began producing lithographic copies of legal documents at Birchin Lane in London in 1810. The company gradually grew, began printing stamps in 1852, and Waterlow"s sons, Alfred, Walter, Sydney and Albert, joined the business. James Waterlow died in 1876, and the company became a limited liability company. In 1877, due to a family dispute, the company split up, and Alfred and his sons formed Waterlow Bros. & Layton. The two companies reunited later in 1920 again under the name Waterlow & Sons.

Waterlow & Sons was involved in the Portuguese Bank Note Crisis of 1925 (Alves dos Reis). Banco de Portugal sued Waterlow & Sons at the High Court in London for counterfeiting in one of the most complex trials in legal history.
