In 4º de 24,8x18 cm. Com [viii], 543, [i] págs. Encadernação da época inteira de pergaminho flexível com o título escrito à pena à cabeça da lombada.

Impressão muito nítida em caracteres redondos, ornamentada com cabeções, iniciais decoradas e florões de remate constituídos por cestos com flores. São especialmente belos e elaborados os do início do texto na página 1.

Exemplar com ex-libris armoriado e com a inscrição - I[ean] Le Covr.t Consel.lr En La CovrDesAydes. No interior da encadernação apresenta anotação manuscrita em latim sobre a compra do livro em Paris, em 20 de Janeiro de 1680. Por baixo tem uma nota em francês referindo que o volume foi impresso em 1644. Na folha de guarda tem uma assinatura de posse - Lecoun. Todas as anotações e assinaturas são em letra coeva.

As folhas preliminares contêm um prefácio do editor aos leitores, o índice das obras publicadas neste volume e uma página em branco. A folha final contém o resumo do privilégio Real, de Luís XIV, de 10 de Agosto de 1643.

2ª edição rara, que pertence a uma variante que não tem a marca do impressor na folha de rosto e tem um resumo do privilégio na última página. A primeira edição foi publicada em 1644.

Contém dezoito discursos sobre diversos assuntos, tais como a Roma Imperial, dissertações sobre peças de teatro e discursos académicos, sobre a eloquência, carta ao Conde de Clermont de Lodeue, sobre a excelência da vida religiosa e sobre a antiguidade da Religião Cristã.

Jean-Louis Guez de Balzac (Angoulême, 1597 - 1654) escritor francês do século XVII, designado por «O restaurador da língua francesa» por ter sido um dos que mais contribuiu para a reforma da língua francesa, pois introduziu na prosa francesa uma nova clareza e precisão. Estudou nas universidades de Poitiers e de Leyde. Foi secretário do Duque d"Épernon, em Metz, agente Cardeal de La Valette, em Roma, de 1621 a 1623, e Richelieu nomeou-o historiador e conselheiro do Rei. Tornou-se membro da Academia Francesa em 1634. No fim da sua vida retirou-se para um convento e legou todos os seus bens a obras de caridade.

Very crisp printing in round characters, ornamented with headings, decorated capital letters, and finishing “fleurons”, consisting of baskets with flowers. The ones at the beginning of the text on page 1 are especially beautiful and elaborate.

copy with armorial ex-libris and with the inscription - I[ean] Le Covr.t Consel.lr En La CovrDesAydes; Inside the binding has handwritten annotation in Latin about the purchase of the book in Paris on 20 January 1680. Underneath it has a note in French stating that the volume was printed in 1644. On the front flyleaf there is a ownership signature - Lecoun. All annotations and signatures are in coeval handwriting.

The preliminary leaves contain a preface by the editor to the readers, the index of the works published in this volume and a blank page. The final leaf contains the summary of the Royal Privilege, by Louis XIV, of 10 August 1643.

Rare 2nd edition, which belongs to a variant that does not have the printer's device on the title page and has a summary of the privilege on the last page. The first edition was published in 1644.

Contains eighteen speeches, on various subjects, such as Imperial Rome, dissertations on plays and academic speeches, on eloquence, a letter to the Count of Clermont de Lodeue, on the excellence of religious life and on the antiquity of the Christian Religion.

Jean-Louis Guez de Balzac (Angoulême 1597 - 1654) French writer of the 17th century, called "The restorer of the French language" because he was one of those who contributed most to the reform of the French language, as he introduced a new clarity and precision into French prose. He studied at the universities of Poitiers and Leyde. He was secretary to the Duke d'Épernon at Metz, agent Cardinal de La Valette at Rome from 1621 to 1623, and Richelieu appointed him historian and adviser to the King. He became a member of the French Academy in 1634. At the end of his life he retired to a convent and bequeathed all his property to charity.
