Encadernação da época inteira de pele de porco com fechos metálicos. Magnifica encadernação com nervos na lombada, verdadeira obra de arte, totalmente lavrada com ferros a seco nas pastas, 3 cercaduras com motivos decorativos vegetalistas, alternados com figuras antropomórficas representando anjos, reis músicos, santos, guerreiros, escritores e legendas em latim.

Ilustrado com um magnifico e importante planisfério anónimo, mas excelentemente gravado segundo o mapa-mundo de Ortelius de 1570, Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. Marca do impressor com as insígnias da companhia de Jesus na folha de rosto. Impressão em caracteres itálicos rotundos. Belas capitulares gravadas com motivos decorativos figuração antropomórfica e florões de remate ao longo do texto.

O P. Maffei esteve doze anos em Portugal, a recolher elementos para escrever esta obra, parece que se baseou no manuscrito de inédito de Acosta. Na obra que relata os descobrimentos portugueses e os trabalhos das missões jesuíticas na Índia, Índias Orientais, América, Pérsia Japão, China, Brasil (com três capítulos) e outras partes da América. A segunda parte trata das cartas de S. Francisco Xavier, inclui no final duas cartas de Luís de Almeida e Francisco Henriques do Brasil. A obra termina com a vida de S. Inácio de Loyola. A primeira edição desta obra foi publicada sem o mapa em Florença 1588.

Azevedo-Samodães 1934. Descreve uma edição de Antuérpia 1605. “Esta História das Índias do P.e Maffei, autor italiano mas que escreveu em latim, é muito para estimar. O sr. Pinheiro Chagas na sua «Historia de Portugal» tomo 4. pag. 325, confessando não a possuir, exprime-se a seu respeito desta forma: «dos escritores estrangeiros foi Maffei que tratou especialmente do descobrimento da Índia pelos portugueses, e veiu a Portugal de propósito para colher informações fidedignas.» A obra compreende também uma parte consagrada ao Brasil.”

 Binding: masterpiece of contemporary pigskin on wooden boards tooled and decorated in blind with concentric frames containing fleurons and allegorical subjects as: kings, musicians, angels, etc underlined with their names. Furniture in cooper clasps closes the cover. Illustrated with a magnificent folding World Map (anonymous planisphere excellently engraved according to the Ortelius, 1570, Theatrum Orbis Terrarum). Title page contains mark of the printer with insignia of the Society of Jesus at the centerpiece. Book printed in round italic characters. Fine capital letters engraved with decorative and anthropomorphic figuration. Fr. Maffei was twelve years in Portugal in order to gather information to write this book. I it seems that he relied on the unpublished manuscript of Acosta. In his work he reported the Portuguese discoveries and the of the missions of the Jesuit in India, East Indies, America, Persia, Japan, China, Brazil (three chapters) and other parts of America. The second part deals with the letters of S. Francisco Xavier, including the final two letters of Luís de Almeida and Francisco Henriques coming from Brazil. The book ends with the life of St. Ignatio of Loyola. The first edition of this work was published in Florence, in 1588, without the map of the present edition. Azevedo-Samodães, 1934, describes a copy from Antwerp, 1605: 'The History of the Indies of Father Maffei, Italian author who wrote in Latin and deserves to be taken in account. Mr. Pinheiro Chagas in his 'Historia de Portugal' (Volume 4. pag. 325) expresses himself in this way: 'amongst the foreign writers who studied the discovery of India by the Portuguese, was particularly Maffei who came to Portugal on the purpose to gather reliable information. The book also includes a part concerning to Brazil.'

Second Cologne edition of an important account of Portuguese discoveries and missionary work in India, the East Indies, Persia, Japan, China, Brazil and other parts of America, first published without the map at Florence in 1588 and with the map at Cologne in 1589. 'Maffei writes extensively about Brazil, describing it very accurately' (Borba de Moraes), in fact devoting three chapters to the subject. The second part (pp. 333-454) gives the texts (in Latin) of the Asian correspondence of Francis Xavier, Louis de Almeyda, Louis Froes and many other Jesuits, including at the end two letters from Pedro Diaz and Franc. Henriquez in Brazil (1570 and 1571). Maffei’s life of Ignatius Loyola (pp. 455-541) rounds off the book. The world map is anonymous, but clearly executed by a very skilled engraver following Ortelius’s world map in his 1570 Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, which remained in use to 1587. In his own atlases, Ortelius corrected the bulge on the west coast of South America around 1588.
