Obra contendo um importante trabalho de recolha, efectuado no terreno pelo autor, com uma análise comparada da cosmologia e dos ritos religiosos dos povos da Índia, em particular: Orissa, Bengala, Bahar, Benarés, Oud, Eleabar, Agra e Deli. O autor fala-nos dos textos védicos e numa época em que o conjunto indefinido - da população da cultura indiana - é tratado por Gentios. O primeiro capitulo contém a história do Império do Indostão desde Auringsebe até Mamet-Sha. O segundo capitulo contém a descrição da revoluções ocorridas em Bengala desde o tempo de Jaffer-Kahn. O terceiro capítulo uma história de Bengala e de Calcutá com dados económicos. O quarto capítulo é a exposição dos dogmas dos indus de acordo com os livros sagrados. O conceito sagrado da transmigração das almas e o suicídio ritual das viúvas (satï ou suttee longamente descritas pelo autor com vários casos por ele expressamente observados, pois esta prática corrente foi banida, posteriormente a esta obra, em 1829). O quinto contém a história da criação do mundo e do universo. O sexto capítulo contém a forma como os indus se apercebem e contam a passagem do tempo (através de um piscar d’olhos) e sobre o seu cálculo da idade do mundo e da sua dissolução próxima. O sétimo capítulo sobre as festas indus, a adoração de imagens e a genealogia dos deuses e dos seus avatares. Os 4 mapas desdobráveis com grande sistema fluvial da Índia, mostram em particular o Rio Ganges e suas as cidades sagradas. Work containing a collection of important fieldwork carried out by the author using a comparative analysis of the cosmology and religious rites of the peoples of India, in particular: Orissa, Bengal, Bahar, Benares, Oud, Eleabar, Agra and Delhi. The author accounts the different interpretations of the Vedic texts at a time when the Indian population was treated as a whole as Gentiles. The first chapter contains the story of the Empire of Hindustan till Mamet-Sha. The second chapter contains a description of the revolutions that happened in Bengal since the time of Jaffer-Kahn. The third chapter is a history of Bengal and Calcutta with some economic data. The fourth chapter is the exposition of the social tenets of Hindus in accordance with the sacred books. The sacred concept of transmigration of souls and ritual suicide of widows sati, or suttee, described at length by the author with several cases observed several times by him. These practices were outlawed after this work, in 1829. The fifth chapter contains the miths of creation of the universe. The sixth chapter contains the way Hindus perceive and regard the time (via a blink of eyes) and on the calculation of the age of the world and its dissolution. The seventh chapter is on the worship of images, on the genealogy of gods and their avatars. The 4 folding maps show the great river system of India, in particular the River Ganges and its holy cities. The last 5 printed and folding plates contain reproductions of mythological drawings and stories contained in the Vedic books.
