The Society was formed in November, 1824, by 48 gentlemen of Philadelphia. It was first designed to publish papers on the importance and utility of canals, railways, and roads, and 'by such means to awaken and animate the citizens of Pennsylvania to promote and adopt these sources of national wealth and prosperity.' In January, 1825, it was decided to send an agent to Great Britain to collect information about all the valuable improvements in canals, railways, etc. that had been made there. Strickland, a native Philadelphia architect and civil engineer, was selected, and these reports and drawings were a result of his mission. They include plans and details of aqueducts; a tunnel, lock and lock gate on the Thames and Medway Canal; locks, etc., of the Birmingham and Liverpool Canal; Prince's and George's Locks, and Brunswick Basin, Liverpool; canal boats; map, plan and section of Dublin's breakwater and harbor; do., of Delaware Bay; turnpike roads; plan of Brandling's railway from Middleton Collieries to Leeds; railway chairs, lines, edge rails; locomotive engine, tender and train; railway wagon; tram railway; horse gin; cranes; mode of coking coal, and oven; blast furnaces; details of steel casting; calico printer's roller; coal gas furnaces; retorts and pipes. On the basis of his study, Strickland asserted that 'Railroads were bound in time to supersede the canals.' 1st ed.
