Luís de Requesens, D, Juan de Austria e Alexandre Farnese, Duque de Parma), dos comandantes militares (Conde de Aremberg, Conde de Mansfeldt, D. Sancho de Ávila, Marquês de Cetona) e do Cardeal de Granvela conselheiro de Margarida de Parma.

Exemplar com a encadernação muito desagastada, em especial na lombada e nos cantos, com as pastas soltas, e reforços recentes nas coifas, com uma mancha à cabeça da maior parte das folhas por vezes muito desvanecida. Extensa nota manuscrita a tinta, em francês, na pasta anterior, assinada Charles Eliot Norton e uma nota manuscrita em letra coeva numa folha de papel solta.

2ª Edição, muto rara, da tradução inglesa da célebre obra sobre as Guerras dos Países Baixos, da autoria do padre Jesuíta Famiano Strada, publicada pela primeira vez em latim - De Bello Belgico, Roma 1637, e traduzida nas principais línguas da Europa. A primeira edição desta tradução inglesa foi publicada em 1650.

O autor teve acesso a importante documentação que transcreve em parte, o que confere um grande valor histórico à sua obra. A narrativa cobre o período desde a abdicação de Carlos V, em 1556 até à queda da fortaleza de Rheinsberg, em 30 de Janeiro de 1590.

Famiano Strada (Roma 1572 - 1649) jesuíta, foi professor de Retórica no Colégio Romano. Em 1617, a pedido de Ranuccio Farnese, Duque de Parma, iniciou a elaboração de uma história das Guerras dos Países Baixos, que opuseram a Espanha e a Holanda cuja independência não era reconhecida pela primeira. Para escrever a sua obra Strada teve acesso ao Arquivo da Casa Farnese, destruído posteriormente, que continha importante documentação pois o pai de Ranuccio, Alexandre Farnese tinha sido Governador dos Países Baixos, ao serviço dos reis espanhóis. Além desta história escreveu uma obra muito influente no ensino da literatura classica latina - Prolusiones et Paradeigmata Eloquentiae, Roma, 1617.

Sir Robert Stapylton (Carlton, Yorkshire 1600? - London 1669) poeta, dramaturgo e tradutor inglês. Foi educado no Convento Beneditino de Douai, onde professou em 1625. Depois de deixar a Ordem, passou a servir os reis de Inglaterra Carlos I e depois Carlos II, tendo passado uma vida retirada durante a ditadura de Cromwel. É autor de diversas peças de teatro, poesias e traduções de importantes obras clássicas, tais como o Panegírico de Plínio, o Jovem; as primeiras seis sátiras de Juvenal; Os amores de Hero e Leandro e as Sátiras completas de Juvenal.

Illustrated with 14 hors-text engravings with the portraits of the translator, the sovereigns of the kingdoms involved in the wars, (Charles V, Philip II, William of Orange); the governors of the Netherlands (Marguerite, Duchess of Parma, Duke of Alba, Mgr. Louis of Requesens, Archbishop Juan of Austria and Alexandre Farnese, Duke of Parma), the military commanders (Count of Aremberg, Count of Mansfeldt, Archbishop Sancho of Avila, Marquis of Cetona) and the Cardinal de Granvela adviser to Margaret of Parma.

Copy with very worn binding, particularly at spine and corners, with loose boards, and recent reinforcements to the caps, with a stain to the head of most leaves sometimes very faded. Extensive handwritten note in ink, in French, on the front pastedown, signed Charles Eliot Norton, and a handwritten note in coeval handwriting on a loose sheet of paper.

Very rare 2nd Edition, of the English translation of the celebrated work on the Wars of the Low Countries by the Jesuit priest Famiano Strada, first published in Latin - De Bello Belgico, Rome 1637, and translated into the main languages of Europe. The first edition of this English translation was published in 1650.

The author had access to important documentation which he partialy transcribes, and which gives his work great historical value. The narrative covers the period from the abdication of Charles V in 1556 to the fall of the fortress of Rheinsberg on 30 January 1590.

Famiano Strada (Rome 1572 - 1649) Jesuit, was professor of Rhetoric at the Collegio Romano. In 1617, at the request of Ranuccio Farnese, Duke of Parma, he began the elaboration of a history of the Wars of the Low Countries, which opposed Spain and Holland, whose independence was not recognised by the former. In order to write his work, Strada had access to the Archive of the House of Farnese, later destroyed, which contained important documentation, since Ranuccio's father Alexander Farnese had been Governor of the Netherlands in the service of the Spanish kings. In addition to this history he wrote a very influential work on the teaching of classical Latin literature - Prolusiones et Paradeigmata Eloquentiae, Rome, 1617.

Sir Robert Stapylton (Carlton, Yorkshire 1600? - London 1669) English poet, playwright and translator. He was educated at the Benedictine Convent of Douai, where he was professed in 1625. After leaving the Order, he went on to serve the kings of England Charles I and then Charles II, spending a life in seclusion during the Cromwell dictatorship. He is the author of several plays, poetry and translations of important classical works, such as the Panegyric of Pliny the Younger; the first six satires of Juvenal; The Loves of Hero and Leander and the complete Satires of Juvenal.
