Clique nas imagens para aumentar. AUGSBURG CHRONICLE URSPRUNG UND ANFANG AUGSBURGS. [AUGSBURG: JOHANN BÄMLER, 14]83.In 8 ° (19 x 13 cm). 32 folhas. Johann Bamler, 1430-1503. Alemanha. H 1,942; GW 2860; BSB-Ink. Illustrated with a full page woodcut engraving with a view of Augsburg. 5 other woodcut engravings. All illustrations contemporary hand coloured. Sheet 1/2R printed only in black, as all copies except for one in Augsburg (cf. GW and Hubay). Copy with small tear restoration (2.5 cm slightly noticeable, not affecting the text) and light soiling on the first two leaves. Binding: 19th century German, dark green roan, flat spine gilt, marbled edges Provenance: Jos. Beuter. On the endpaper manuscript ownership title of count Oswald Carl Friedrich von Seilern und Aspang (1900-1967), an important Anglo-Austrian art collector. First and only 15th century edition of this history of Augsburg, written with special reference to the Benedictine monastery of SS. Ulrich and Afra. Tells the story of these and other saints, the monastic church and bishops, ending with a long list of relics that could be found in the monastery. The publication of this guide by Bamler is particularly interesting in light of its association with the monastic press established under the direction of Abbot Melchior Stamhaim where his type 2 was used (probably by him at the monastery) in 1473-1474. Two woodcuts were specifically created for this edition: A great view of the city and the destruction of the monastery. The printer, Johann Bamler, may also have been the author (he has also written and published a chronicle of popes and emperors). However, some scholars attributed the Chronicle to Ulrich Schwarz, the controversial mayor of Augsburg. Johann Bamler, 1430-1503. Germany. Scribe, illuminator, printer and bookseller from Augsburg. Bamler is mentioned in records from the city of Augusburg since 1453 as a scribe and after 1477 as a printer. He seems to have started his career as a calligrapher and illuminator. Probably learned the art of printing at Günther Zainer workshop. The first book printed by Bamler appeared in April 1472, and the first book printed and illustrated in his workshop in September 1473. He based his typefaces on local cursive script, and they are considered to have contributed to the development of the Schwabacher (blackletter typeface which evolved from Gothic Textualis). Approximately half of the books printed in his print shop were illustrated with woodcuts or other decorative elements. He belonged to the guild of painters, glassmakers, woodcut-makers and goldbeaters, and eventually reached a high position within the guild. His printing activity ceased in 1495. Ulrich Schwarz, 1422-1478. Germany. Mayor of Augsburg. Author of several observations and chronicles in municipal history. Along with the smaller guilds, Schwarz tried to implement a constitutional reform. Conflicts with competing groups within the Oligarchic elite over a period of several years ultimately led to his deposition and execution. In the political turmoil of the 16th century, Schwarz was typecast as a negative example. Very rare. Only 5 referenced copies. The others are in Munich, Library of Congress (Rosenwald collection) and Augsburg (2 copies). H 1,942; GW 2860; BSB-Ink. A-841; Hubay, Augsburg, 205; Schramm III, 23, and 26; Schreiber 3391; Baer, Historienbücher, pp.45-46, XII, no. 52; Goff A-1213. Referência: 1605NM002
