The work Exempla Quatuor Et Viginti Nuper Invent A Ante Caput De Ominibus reflects on the mystical and religious subjects that are of interest for the common man, namely: the worship of the Gods; the neglected religion; the prodigies; the miracles; the ancient religions; the military discipline; the triumph of justice; the good and evil character; fortune; patience; humbleness; degeneration of generations; study and work; the idleness; lust; anger and hate; greed; pride and powerlessness; villainy; the sedition of the Roman people; the cupidity of life; among many other philosophical themes. Aldus Manutius (1452-1516) was the foremost editor, printer, and publisher of the Italian Renaissance. He published in Venice from 1494 until his death in 1515. The first Valerius Maximus edition was an octavo edition. The following Valerius Maximus editions show the care on a Renaissance book. At the heart of Aldus production were the Greek classics. Of his total output, 30 editions were editiones princepes (first printed editions) of a number of Greek literary, historical and philosophical texts. Since many of these texts survived only in rare manuscripts, their future was guaranteed by Aldus" work. After 1500 he began producing smaller, more manageable books, in which the text was unencumbered by comments. This change in format, the octavo-sized volume, was an innovation popularized by Aldus. The octavo editions of the classics have often been called the precursors of the modern pocket book. Referências/References: Hain vol. 4, 451-455.
