MERIAN. (Matthäus) CARTOGRAFIA DO SÉCULO XVII – PLANTA DA CIDADE DE GOA

Cartógrafo e editor: Matthäus Merian

Título: Goa

Data: Frankfurt, 1646

Cartography of the 17th century - View of the city of Goa (India)

Cartographer and editor: Matthäus Merian

Title: Goa

Date: Frankfurt, 1646

Dimensions: Plate size – 28 x 35 cm; with passpartout: 38.5 x 46 cm

Hand coloured plan of the city of Goa published in the Neuwe Archontologia Cosmica by Johann Ludwig Gottfried, showing the city at the beginning of the 17th century.

The map is oriented to the South (on top). It is decorated with several ships alongside the coastline and a pair of elephants at the docks. At the top right there is a cartouche with an index in German of 43 buildings depicted in the map, a compass rose at the bottom left and on top left the coat of arms of Goa at the time depicting St. Catherine’s wheel with the Saint herself above it holding a book in one hand (St. Catherine is the patron of booksellers) and a sword in the other (Goa had been conquered on St. Catherine’s day in 1510).

Merian’s map was based on the one by Linschoten from 1596, reflecting, however, the changes in cartographic decoration occurred during the fifty years between the two maps.

Matthäus Merian the Elder (Basel, 1593 – Bad Schwalbach, 1650) studied drawing and copper engraving with the engraver Friedrich Meyer in Zurich. In 1619 he moved to Frankfurt where he worked with the editor Johann Theodor de Bry. He carried on and completed the Grand Voyages and Petit Voyages that have been started by de Bry in 1590. Together with Martin Zeiller he produced 21 volumes of the popular Topographia. This work was carried out after his death by his son Matthäus the Younger and Caspar.
