SOTTO MAYOR. (Frei Luís de) CANTICI CANTICORUM. SALOMONIS INTERPRETATIO.

Autore F. Lodovico Soto Mayor Ord. Praedicat. S. Theol. Magistro, et Divinarum Conimbricae Professore. Quam speciosi pedes evangelizantium bona. Rom. x. Ulysippone [Lisboa], Apud Petrum Crasbeeck, 1599 [Colofon] Olysippone, Cum licentia Sanctae & generalis Inquisitionis excudebat Petrus CrasbeecK, Anno Domini 1601.

2 volumes de 29x20,7 cm. Com [vi, ii br.], lxiv, 1 - 723, [i br.] págs; 725 a 1319 (aliás 1317), [1], 152, [iii, i br.] págs.

2 volumes of 29x20.7 cm. [vi, ii br.], lxiv, 1 - 723, [i bl.] pp; 725 to 1319 (alias 1317), [1], 152, [iii, i bl.] pp. Bound in contemporary entire flexible parchment, preserving original endpapers.

Magnificent allegorical frontispiece with architectural and emblematic motifs engraved in intaglio, "Ernesto Soares. "The central cartouche is occupied by the figure of the shepherdess Sulamite, on whom angels drop roses and around it can be read the caption: "Fulcite me floribus, quid amore langueo", meaning "sustain me with flowers, because I feel myself fainting with love".

Copy bound in two volumes, with some acidity typical of the paper used in the edition, stronger in the last quire. The frontispiece bears two coeval circular ownership stamps (probably of a religious congregation) with the initials CVPF, which are repeated on the front flyleaf AA1 (p. 725). Two handwritten library quotations on the guard leaves of both volumes. Occasional light damp stains. Pagination error from 1217 to 1220.

A very rare work of which there is no copy in the BNP. According to Porbase in Portugal there are only copies in poor condition in the University of Coimbra Libraries. It was a major editorial and typographical undertaking, subsidised by the University of Coimbra and took several years to be produced, due to financial difficulties, as can be read in the royal privilege that accompanies the work.

Sotomaior's commentaries on King Solomon's "Song of Songs" are a vast repository of classical, humanistic, patristic and rabbinic culture, including quotations from St Bernard, Origen, St Gregory, St Jerome, Becanus and others; among the Greco-Latin classics we find Homer, Plutarch, Euripides, Plato, Aristophanes, Virgil, Juvenal, Horace, Ovid, Cicero and many others.

Among the nearly six hundred commented editions published up to the end of the sixteenth century, that of Sotomaior is one of the most remarkable and important, being as it were the culmination of a tradition, its highest point. The author discusses at length the most appropriate translation of each passage and its precise meaning exhaustively, with great developments of the various biblical passages, in order to extract from the sacred text the greatest number of teachings for the reader and always reveals an interest in making doctrine and presenting practical guidelines for the life of the Christian.

At the same time he develops theological topics with great depth and knowledge, such as on the Angels, Christ, the Church, God, the Virgin Mary and the Sacraments. All the articles of Christian Faith and morality are dealt with in this magnificent work.

The Song of Songs is one of the most commented upon texts of Sacred Scripture and one of the most difficult to interpret. From the beginning of the printing press, around 1460 until the end of the 16th century, 107 editions were published in various languages and 569 commented editions. Some of them are leading works of universal literature, such as those of Fr. Louis de Leon, St. Teresa of Jesus and St. John of the Cross. In the 20th century, the commentaries by Paul Claudel and in Portugal by Tolentino de Mendonça are notable.

Luís de Sotto Mayor (1526-1610), Dominican religious, born in Lisbon, entered the order in 1543 and completed his studies at the University of Louvain, in Flanders; a notable preacher, mastering Latin and Greek, he participated in the third session of the Council of Trent and was Professor of Sacred Scripture at the University of Coimbra for over 20 years. He was a partisan of D. António, Prior of Crato, and for this reason he was away from teaching for some time. He is the author of another commentary on the Canticle, published in Paris in 1611, and of Commentaries on the Epistles of St. Paul, published in Paris in 1610.
