Lisboa aos tres dias do mes de Setembro, Antonio Veloso Estaço a fes Anno do nascimento de nosso senhor Jesu Christo de mil seis centos e quarenta e sete. [Lisboa, 3 de Setembro de 1647]

De 23x65,6 cm. Com 2 fólios de pergaminho. O primeiro tem a assinatura do Rei D. João IV e o respectivo selo pendente de cera vermelha seguro por um cordão de nastro, com a cruz da Ordem de Cristo ao centro, dentro de uma caixa de metal. O segundo está assinado pelo Regente D. Pedro futuro rei D. Pedro II.

A carta de padrão tem desgaste de manuseamento no canto superior direito com, reforço antigo, e algum desgaste superficial dificultando, mas não impedindo a leitura e com falta de um bocado de pergaminho no pé da apostilha, possívelemente onde estaia outro selo pendente. A Apostilha não está completa faltando o início.

Concede uma tença de vinte mil reis sobre os rendimentos da Alfândega da Ilha de S. Miguel, nos Açores, a vencer desde 18 de Julho de 1647, a Manuel de Sousa de Meneses, filho de Nicolao Pereira de Sousa, para o seu filho Manuel de Sousa de Meneses a quem o rei concedera o hábito da Ordem de Cristo.

Tem cosido no lado direito uma parte de outro documento: uma apostilha concedendo a mesma tença a um sobrinho do beneficiário e a pedido deste. «Aos vinte do mes de Janeiro Francisco Ribeiro Nogueira a fez anno do nascimento de nosso senhor Jesus Cristo de mil seiscentos oitenta e hum Manuel Ferreira Rebello o fez escrever.

Dimensões da Carta de Padrão 23x33 cm. Texto com 20 linhas, assinaturas e resumo. No verso apresenta os seguintes documentos de validação e registo: «Por Portaria de Gaspar de Faria Severim de noue de Agosto de 1647» com duas assinaturas; Registado no livro da Fazenda da Ordem de Cristo; Registado no Livro da Chancelaria da Ordem de Cristo, com uma assinatura, e a certidão do pagamento dos emolumentos. Tem assinaturas na margem direita.

Dimensões da apostilha 22x33,3 cm. Texto com 14 linhas, assinatura «Principe», o Regente D. Pedro, futuro rei D. Pedro II e o resumo de três linhas. No verso apresenta os seguintes documentos de validação e registo: «Por Portaria do secretario... 5 de Dezembro de 1680»; Registado no livro da Fazenda da Ordem de Cristo, Rebello; Assntada ano Livro da fazenda da Ilha de S. Miguel, Rebello; Outro registo; Assentada Apostilla e posta a uerba... Lisboa 4 de Março de 1681; «A folha 224 do Livro que servio de Registo na Fazenda da Ordem de Cristo do anno de 1647 fica posta a verba na carta de padrão que esta apostilla Requere... 25 de Fevereiro de 1681».

A carta de padrão, depois da titulação normal do Rei, apresenta a titulação da Ordem de Cristo: «como governador e perpetuo Administrador que sou da ordem de caualeria do mestrado de nosso senhor jesu Christo», pois a tença a ser concedida é a favor de cavaleiros da Ordem de Cristo.

A tença foi concedida ao filho atendendo aos serviços prestados por seu pai Manuel de Sousa de Meneses, nos vinte anos anteriores, na administração da justiça como Corregedor da Comarca de Viseu e da Comarca de Évora e na execuçao de serviços na fronteira do Alentejo depois da Restauração da Monarquia.

O filho de Manuel de Sousa de Meneses, que era homónimo de seu pai, doutorou-se em Cânones e seguiu uma carreira eclesiástica. Foi abade de Soutelo e, em 19 de Agosto de 1680, foi nomeado Arcebispo de Goa, tomou posse em 20 de Setembro de 1681 e exerceu o seu munus até falecer em 31 de Janeiro de 1684.

Na data em que foi nomeado solicitou que a tença que lhe tinha sido concedida em atenção aos serviços do seu pai, fosse atribuída ao seu sobrinho, tambem seu homónimo, o que lhe foi concedido.

 MANUSCRIPT - SIGILLOGRAPHY – 17th. CENTURY - PATTERN LETTER FROM KING JOÃO IV GRANTING A TENÇA (PENSION GIVEN IN REMUNERATION OF SERVICES) OF TWENTY THOUSAND REIS (CURRENCY) TO MANUEL DE SOUSA DE MENESES.

Lisbon on the third day of September, Antonio Veloso Estaço did it. Year of the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ one thousand six hundred and forty-seven. [Lisbon, 3 September 1647]

23x65.6 cm. With 2 parchment folios. The first has the signature of King João IV and the respective red wax pendant seal held by a cord, with the cross of the Order of Christ in the centre, inside a metal box. The second is signed by the Regent Dom Pedro future King Dom Pedro II.

The Pattern letter shows signs of handling at the upper right corner with old reinforcement, and some surface wear making it difficult but not impossible to read and with a piece of parchment missing at the foot of the booklet, possibly where another pendant seal should be. The booklet is not complete with the beginning missing.

Gives a tença of twenty thousand reis (currency) on the revenues of the Customs of the Island of S. Miguel, in the Azores, due from 18 July 1647, to Manuel de Sousa de Meneses, son of Nicolao Pereira de Sousa, for his son Manuel de Sousa de Meneses to whom the king had granted the habit of the Order of Christ.

It has sewn on the right side a part of another document: an apostille granting the same purse to a nephew of the beneficiary and at his request. "On the twentieth of January Francisco Ribeiro Nogueira wrote it, in the year of the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ one thousand six hundred eighty-one Manuel Ferreira Rebello made it be written.

Miguel, Rebello; "On page 224 of the Book that served as Record in the Treasury of the Order of Christ for the year 1647 the amount is set in the pattern letter that this apostille Requires ... 25 February 1681".

The pattern letter, after the normal titling of the King, presents the titling of the Order of Christ: "as governor and perpetual Administrator that I am of the Knight Order of the masters of our lord jesus Christ", as the tença is to be granted is in favour of knights of the Order of Christ.

The tença was granted to the son given the services rendered by his father Manuel de Sousa de Meneses, in the previous twenty years, in the administration of justice as Inpector of the County of Viseu and the Cpunty of Évora and in the execution of services on the border of Alentejo after the Restoration of the Monarchy.

The son of Manuel de Sousa de Meneses, who was his father's namesake, earned a doctorate in canons and pursued an ecclesiastical career. He was abbot of Soutelo and on 19 August 1680 was appointed Archbishop of Goa, took office on 20 September 1681 and exercised his munus until he died on 31 January 1684.

On the date he was appointed he requested that the tença which had been granted to him in consideration of his father's services, be awarded to his nephew, also his namesake, which was granted.
