Obra ornada de belas xilogravuras, nomeadamente: escudo das armas reais de Portugal cercado por laço de folhagem, em círculo oval e tarja com pequenas vinhetas na folha de rosto; marca do impressor com uma árvore com 4 frutos pendentes defronte de um horizonte montanhoso com um sol radiante, nas páginas 191 e 219; cabeções compostos por motivos florais e vinhetas tipográficas; numerosas tarjas com pequenas vinhetas a dividir os conteúdos; iniciais decoradas; florões de remate alegóricos, com anjos, adornos arquitectónicos, etc.

Impressão em caracteres redondos e ocasionais itálicos, nomeadamente no prólogo, assinaturas, alguns subtítulos, notas impressas à margem e índice de assuntos.

Exemplar com falha de material a meio da lombada e rasgos e pequenas falhas nas folhas de guarda. Apresenta manchas nas pastas e leves manchas de humidade, mais pronunciadas nas primeiras folhas. Tem, na guarda anterior, extensa assinatura de posse coeva de Jorge Pinela Barradas, freire professo da Ordem de Santiago, com nota do custo de venda e posterior acrescento de pendor irónico por outra mão. Ex-libris oleográfico do século XX no verso da pasta anterior.

Apresenta os seguintes erros tipográficos: gralha na assinatura da folha Oiii, constando Oii ao invés; a paginação salta da 62 para a 64 e da 64 para a 66; a página 112 aparece em duplicado onde deveria estar 113 e a numeração segue errada por diante. Algumas folhas encontram-se fora de ordem, a saber as que contêm as páginas: 142-143 trocada com 140-141; 166-167 trocada com 164-165; 202-203 trocada com 200-201.

Primeiras páginas não numeradas com prólogo do mestre, licenças do Santo Ofício (Frei Manuel da Graça, Frei Manuel da Conceição, entre outros), licença do Paço, Resposta do Procurador da Coroa (Oliveira) e taxa.

A obra divide-se em duas partes: até à página 106 encontra-se a Regra e estatutos, seguindo-se as Definições e Reformação até à página 192, com página de título própria na 109 onde se lê: «DEFFINIÇOENS, REFORMAÇAM DA ORDEM DE SANTIAGO DE ESPADA; FEYTAS EM CAPITULO GERAL, por ElRey Philippe III: NO ANNO DE 1627.». A finalizar a obra encontra-se um sumário das dispensações entre as páginas 194 e 197 e um índice de assuntos nas restantes. Tem uma errata na página final não numerada. As páginas 107, 108, 110 e 193 estão em branco.

Esta é a 5.ª edição, tendo as anteriores sido publicadas por Hermão de Campos, Setúbal, 1509; e por Germão Galhardo, Lisboa em 1540, 1542 e 1548.

Work decorated with beautiful woodcuts, namely: Royal coat of arms of Portugal surrounded by foliage loop, in an oval circle and stripe with small vignettes on the title page; printer"s mark with a tree with 4 hanging fruits in front of a mountainous horizon with a radiant sun, on pages 191 and 219; headpieces composed of floral motifs and typographical vignettes; numerous strips with small vignettes dividing the contents; decorated initials; allegorical finishing fleurons, with angels, architectural ornaments, etc.

Printed in round characters and occasional italics, notably in the prologue, signatures, some subheadings, notes printed in the margin, and subject index.

Copy with some flaws in leather in the middle of the spine and tears and small flaws in the endpapers. Stains on the folders and light moisture stains, more pronounced on the first leaves. On the front endpaper, there is an extensive handwritten ownership title from Jorge Pinela Barradas, professed friar of the Order of Santiago, with a note of the cost of sale and later addition of an ironic slant by another hand. 20th century oleographic ex-libris stamp on the back of the front folder.

It has the following typographical errors: a typo in the signature of the leaf Oiii, with Oii instead; the pagination jumps from 62 to 64 and from 64 to 66; page 112 appears in duplicate where it should be 113 and the numbering continues wrongly. Some sheets are out of order, namely those containing the pages: 142-143 replaced by 140-141; 166-167 replaced by 164-165; 202-203 replaced by 200-201.

First unnumbered pages with prologue by the master, licences from the Holy Office (Friar Manuel da Graça, Friar Manuel da Conceição, among others), licence from the Palace, Reply from the Crown Prosecutor (Oliveira) and fee.

The work is divided into two parts: up to page 106 you will find the Regra e estatutos, followed by Definições e Reformação to page 192, with its own title page at 109 which reads: «DEFFINIÇOENS, REFORMAÇAM DA ORDEM DE SANTIAGO DE ESPADA; FEYTAS EM CAPITULO GERAL, por ElRey Philippe III: NO ANNO DE 1627.». At the end of the work there is a summary of dispensations between pages 194 and 197 and an index of subjects on the remaining pages. There is an erratum on the final unnumbered page. Pages 107, 108, 110, and 193 are blank.

This is the 5th edition, the previous ones having been published by Hermão de Campos, Setúbal, 1509; and by Germão Galhardo, Lisbon in 1540, 1542 and 1548.
