Esta primeira edição, rara e procurada do primeiro livro publicado por Manuel Alegre, foi apreendida pela PIDE, tal como a 2. ª edição de 1966, por causa do poeta ser membro do Partido Comunista Português. Obra muito importante para a história da poesia portuguesa e da oposição ao Estado Novo.

É um cuidado trabalho tipográfico de uma sóbria beleza composto e impresso nas oficinas da Atlântida, em Coimbra.

A pagina 5 apresenta a dedicatória impressa à Avó, aos pais e à mulher do escritor, a página 7 uma citação do Hóspede de Job de Cardoso Pires, e de página 9 a 13 decorre o prefácio da obra com o título - Rosas Vermelhas, em que o autor recorda a sua prisão em Maio de 1963 entretecendo esse facto com as suas memórias de infância e dos dias do seu aniversário em 12 de Maio.

A obra foi a revelação de um escritor e tornou-se uma bandeira da luta contra a ditadura salazarista, em especial a célebre poesia - Trova do vento que passa. Nasceu fruto da circunstância de ele próprio ter participado na Guerra do Ultramar, ter feito oposição ao regime e ter sido preso e obrigado a exilar-se.

O Livro tem um conjunto de poemas que decorrem da experiência do poeta na Guerra em Angola - Nambuangongo, meu amor, outro conjunto designado - A rapariga do país de Abril e outros poemas como - País de Abril e Explicação do País de Abril, que parecem uma premonição do futuro 25 de Abril de 1974.

Manuel Alegre de Melo Duarte (Águeda, 1936 - ) Em 1956 Manuel Alegre ingressou na Faculdade de Direito da Universidade de Coimbra e em 1957 tornou-se militante do Partido Comunista Português, que viria a abandonar 11 anos depois, em 1968. Em 1961 foi mobilizado para Angola. Preso pela PIDE, passa seis meses na Fortaleza de S. Paulo, em Luanda, onde escreve grande parte dos poemas do seu primeiro livro, Praça da Canção, a presente obra. Em 1964 partiu para o exílio em Paris e depois Argel, onde foi eleito membro do comité nacional da Frente Patriótica de Libertação Nacional e a colaborou na emissora Voz da Liberdade.

Regressou a Portugal após o 25 de Abril de 1974. Dirigente histórico do Partido Socialista desde 1974, foi deputado durante 34 anos de 1975 a 2009, vice-presidente da Assembleia da República, de 1995 a 2009. Exerceu muitas funções políticas no âmbito do Partido Socialista e candidatou-se a Secretário Geral contra José Sócrates, em 2004. Foi Secretário de Estado em vários governos do seu Partido e candidatou-se ás eleições presidenciais de 2006, onde obteve o segundo lugar com mais cerca de 400 mil votos que Mário Soares, que era o candidato oficial do PS e ficou em terceiro lugar. Foi membro do Conselho de Estado de 1996 a 2002, 2005 a 2016, e exerce presentemente essas funções desde 2022.

A sua vasta obra literária, que inclui romances, contos, ensaios, mas sobretudo livros de poesia, tem sido amplamente difundida e aclamada. Foram-lhe atribuídos os mais distintos prémios literários: Grande Prémio de Poesia da APE-CTT, Prémio da Crítica Literária da AICL, Prémio Fernando Namora e Prémio Pessoa, em 1999. Ao seu livro de poemas Doze Naus foi atribuído o Prémio Dom Dinis, em 2007. Foi agraciado com muitos outros prémios: Grande Prémio Vida Literária (2016) Grande Prémio de Literatura (2016) Prémio de Consagração de Carreira da Sociedade Portuguesa de Autores (2016) Prémio Camões (2017).

This rare and sought-after first edition of Manuel Alegre"s first published book was seized by PIDE, just like the 2nd edition of 1966, because the poet was a member of the Portuguese Communist Party. Very important work for the history of Portuguese poetry and opposition to the Estado Novo.

It is a careful typographic work of sober beauty composed and printed in the workshops of Atlântida, in Coimbra.

Page 5 shows the printed dedication to the writer"s grandmother, parents and wife, page 7 a quotation from Cardoso Pires" Hóspede de Job, and from pages 9 to 13 there is the preface to the work with the title - Rosas Vermelhas (Red Roses), in which the author recalls his arrest in May 1963, interweaving this fact with his childhood memories and his birthday on 12 May.

The work was the revelation of a writer and became a banner in the fight against the Salazar dictatorship, especially the famous poem - Trova do vento que passa. It was born out of the fact that he himself had taken part in the Overseas War, had opposed the regime and had been imprisoned and forced into exile.

The book has a set of poems that stem from the poet"s experience of the war in Angola - Nambuangongo, meu amor, another set called - A rapariga do país de Abril and other poems such as - País de Abril and Explanação do País de Abril, which seem to be a premonition of the future 25 April 1974.

Manuel Alegre de Melo Duarte (Águeda, 1936 - ) In 1956 Manuel Alegre entered the Faculty of Law at the University of Coimbra and in 1957 he became a member of the Portuguese Communist Party, which he left 11 years later, in 1968. He returned to Portugal after 25 April 1974. A historic leader of the Socialist Party since 1974, he was a member of parliament for 34 years from 1975 to 2009, and vice-president of the Assembly of the Republic from 1995 to 2009. He has held many political positions within the Socialist Party and ran for Secretary General against José Sócrates in 2004. He was Secretary of State in several of his party"s governments and ran in the 2006 presidential elections, where he came second with around 400,000 more votes than Mário Soares, who was the official PS candidate and came third. He was a member of the Council of State from 1996 to 2002, 2005 to 2016, and is currently serving since 2022.

His vast literary body of work, which includes novels, short stories, essays, but above all books of poetry, has been widely published and acclaimed. He has been awarded the most distinguished literary prizes: The APE-CTT Grand Prize for Poetry, the AICL Literary Critics Prize, the Fernando Namora Prize and the Pessoa Prize in 1999. His book of poems Doze Naus was awarded the Dom Dinis Prize in 2007. He has been honoured with many other prizes: Grand Prize for Literary Life (2016) Grand Prize for Literature (2016) Career Consecration Prize from the Portuguese Society of Authors (2016) Camões Prize (2017).
