Muito raro e procurado, em especial quando aparece só este volume relativo a Portugal. A Academia das Ciências de Lisboa e a Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal têm colecções completas com 21 volumes.

Como acontece em todos os exemplares desta edição, este apresenta diversos erros na numeração das páginas entre a página 337, que está numerada 327, até à página 368, que está numerada 358, mas tem todos os cadernos completos e está completo

Salmon publicou em 1739 a primeira edição, em 3 volumes, do original desta obra com o título: Modern History, or the Present State of all Nations … illustrated with Cuts and Maps … by Herman Moll, London. Seguiram-se outras edições como a 3.ª de Londres, 1744–66. É considerada a sua obra mais importante e foi sucessivamemte continuada, e publicada em várias edições, algumas atribuídas a pseudónimos. Em Amsterdam, a partir de 1729, começou a ser publicada uma tradução em holandês, em 44 volumes e a presente tradução para italiano de toda a obra, em 23 volumes, foi publicada em Veneza entre 1740 e 1761 e também em Nápoles, pelo impressor Ricciardi, quase na mesma época.

As páginas preliminares incluem a dedicatória do impressor a Gioseffo Nicola Spada, Senador de Bolonha; um índice dos capítulos, um índice das gravuras; com as licenças do santo Ofício de Veneza de 15 de Fevereiro de 1744 e o registo de 9 de Março de 1745.

Contém 12 capítulos, numerados de I a XII, consagrados a Portugal e 5 capítulos sobre a história de Espanha, numerados de XXI a XXV. Os capítulos sobre Portugal têm os seguintes títulos: I - Sobre a situação, o tamanho do reino de Portugal, assim como sobre os nomes, origem, habitantes, clima, montanhas, rios e os seus produtos; II - Sobre as pessoas, os respectivos costumes, génio e temperamento e os modos de viajar no país; III - Sobre as várias províncias em que está dividido o país, com uma descrição pormenorizada da Estremadura, da sua capital, Lisboa e de outras cidades mais impoprtantes, assim como descições dos palácios, das Igrejas, e dos edifícios públicos; IV - Descrição da Província da Beira; V - Descrição da Província de Entre-Minho e Douro; VI - Descrição da Província de Trás-os-Montes; VII - Descrição da Província do Alentejo; VIII - Descrição da Província, ou Reino, do Algarve; IX - Resumo da história de Portugal; X - Sobre o Governo civil, as respectivas pregorrativas, sobre a sucessão na coroa de Portugal. Sobre os titulos, armas, rendas e forças do Rei; XI - Da religião e do governo eclesiástico da Espanha, de Portugal, assim como sobre as Universidades, a legislação e a língua; XII - Sobre o comércio externo, a navegação e as várias espécies de moedas.

Os capítulos sobre a história de Espanha têm os seguintes títulos: XXI - A sucessão da casa de Borbon, no Reino de Espanha; XXII - Continuação da história de Espanha, juntamente com a de Portugal, desde 1730 até ao presente; XXIII - O Governo civil, pregorrativas e sucessão da coroa. Sobre os titulos do Rei, das armas, dos oficiais superiores do estado, da nobreza e dos grandes; XXIV - Sobre a força, os exércitos e as entradas do Reino de Espanha, da moeda e das questões da navegação; XXV - Sobre alguns dos costumes próprios da Espanha e de Portugal.

Thomas Salmon (Meppershall, Bedfordshire, 1679 – London, 1767) geógrafo e historiador inglês. Nathanael Salmon era o seu irmão mais velho. Realizou diversas viagens marítimas e viajou pela Europa, tendo acompanhado George Anson numa viagem à volta do mundo em 1739 e 1740. Possuiu um café em Cambridge, cidade onde escreveu a maior parte da sua obra e, posteriormente, mudou-se para Londres.

Destacou-se com um divulgador da história e da geografia colocando á disposição de vastos públicos leitores os conhecimentos mais actulizados da época, sendo por isso muito influente na formação de visões da história que se tornaram percepções gerais entre um público letrado.

É autor de numerosas obras, muitas delas com traduções para francês e outras línguas, tais como: A Review of the History of England, from the Conquest to the Revolution, London, 1722; An Impartial Examination of Bishop Burnet's History of his own Times, 2 vols. Very rare and sought-after, especially when only this volume on Portugal appears isolated. The Lisbon Academy of Sciences and the National Library of Portugal have the complete collections of 21 volumes.

As with all copies of this edition, this one has several errors in the numbering of the pages between page 337, which is numbered 327, to page 368, which is numbered 358, but it has all the quires and is complete

In 1739 Salmon published the first edition, in 3 volumes, of the original version of this work with the title: Modern History, or the Present State of all Nations ... illustrated with Cuts and Maps ... by Herman Moll, London. Other editions followed, such as the 3rd London edition, 1744-66. It is considered his most important work and was successively continued and published in various editions, some attributed to pseudonyms. In Amsterdam, from 1729, a Dutch translation began to be published in 44 volumes, and the present Italian translation of the entire work, in 23 volumes, was published in Venice between 1740 and 1761 and also in Naples, by the printer Ricciardi, at almost the same time.

The preliminary pages include the printer's dedication to Gioseffo Nicola Spada, Senator of Bologna; an index of the chapters, an index of the engravings; with the licences of the Holy Office of Venice of 15 February 1744 and the register of 9 March 1745.

It contains 12 chapters, numbered I to XII, devoted to Portugal and 5 chapters on the history of Spain, numbered XXI to XXV. The chapters on Portugal have the following titles: I - On the situation, the size of the kingdom of Portugal, as well as the names, origin, inhabitants, climate, mountains, rivers and their products; II - On the people, their customs, genius and temperament and the ways of travelling in the country; III - On the various provinces into which the country is divided, with a detailed description of Estremadura, its capital Lisbon and other more important cities, as well as descriptions of palaces, churches and public buildings; IV - Description of the Province of Beira; V - Description of the Province of Entre-Minho and Douro; VI - Description of the Province of Trás-os-Montes; VII - Description of the Province of Alentejo; VIII - Description of the Province, or Kingdom, of the Algarve; IX - Summary of the history of Portugal; X - On the civil government, the respective pregoratives, on the succession to the crown of Portugal. On the titles, arms, revenues and forces of the King; XI - On the religion and ecclesiastical government of Spain and Portugal, as well as the universities, legislation and language; XII - On foreign trade, navigation and the various types of currency.

The chapters on the history of Spain are entitled: XXI - The succession of the house of Borbon in the Kingdom of Spain; XXII - Continuation of the history of Spain, together with that of Portugal, from 1730 to the present; XXIII - Civil government, pregorratives and succession of the crown. On the titles of the King, the arms, the senior state officials, the nobility and the grandees; XXIV - On the strength, the armies and the entries of the Kingdom of Spain, the currency and matters of navigation; XXV - On some of the customs of Spain and Portugal.

Thomas Salmon (Meppershall, Bedfordshire, 1679 - London, 1767). English geographer and historian. Nathanael Salmon was his older brother. He undertook several sea voyages and travelled around Europe, having accompanied George Anson on a round-the-world trip in 1739 and 1740. He owned a café in Cambridge, where he wrote most of his work, and later moved to London.

He distinguished himself as a disseminator of history and geography, making available to vast readerships the most up-to-date knowledge of the time, and was therefore very influential in shaping views of history that became general perceptions among a literate public.
