Numerosas passagens sublinhadas e anotadas a tinta azul, incidindo particularmente sobre a interpretação do taoísmo como «panthéisme réaliste», a crítica da moral confuciana e a noção de não-agir. Papel com algum acastanhamento; encadernação com desgaste nas margens e na lombada, sem afectar a solidez do volume.

Edição de 1913 do segundo tomo de «Taoïsme, série publicada pelo jesuíta Léon Wieger durante a sua actividade missionária e intelectual na China. Reúne, sob o título Les Pères du système taoïste, versões francesas anotadas dos três textos canónicos tradicionalmente atribuídos a Lao-tzeu, Lie-tzeu e Tchoang-tzeu.

A obra abre com as licenças da ordem, por Raphaël Gaudissart e Aemilio Becker, e o Imprimatur de H. Maquet, Jesuíta, Bispo de Amathont. e Vigário apostólico de Tche-li. Segue-se o prefácio datado de Hien-hien, 2 de Abril de 1913, no qual Wieger expõe a sua leitura histórica e doutrinal dos textos. Segue-se o Tao-tei-king, organizado segundo os seus capítulos tradicionais; o Lie-tzeu, em oito livros; e o Tchoang-tzeu, em trinta e três capítulos. Os extensos índices finais permitem localizar temas, personagens, episódios e conceitos, entre eles o «Princípio», yin e yang, transformação, metempsicose, natureza, não-agir, governo e crítica do convencionalismo.

Muito importante para o estudo dos trabalhos pioneiros e fundamentais para o conhecimento da cultura chinesa realizados pelos jesuítas desde o século XVI. O seu valor é ainda acrescido pelo interesse particular deste exemplar residir na proveniência de João de Castro Osório e no registo da sua leitura activa que as numerosas marcações documentam. A presença deste tratado sino-francês na sua biblioteca, anotado em pontos relativos à metafísica, à ética e à política taoistas, constitui um testemunho material do horizonte de leituras de um editor decisivo para a transmissão póstuma da obra de Pessanha.

Léon Wieger (Estrasburgo, 1856 – Pequim, 1933) foi médico, sacerdote da Companhia de Jesus e missionário em China, onde desenvolveu actividade de estudo, tradução e divulgação da história religiosa, da escrita e das tradições intelectuais chinesas. Publicou, entre outras obras, Histoire des croyances religieuses et des opinions philosophiques en Chine e a série Taoïsme. As suas traduções conservaram importância documental na história da sinologia missionária, embora a crítica posterior tenha revisto várias das suas interpretações filológicas e doutrinais.

João de Castro Osório de Oliveira (Setúbal, 1899 – Lagoal, Caxias, 1970) foi poeta, dramaturgo, ensaísta e historiador literário. Filho de Ana de Castro Osório, acompanhou ainda adolescente a preparação da primeira edição da «Clepsidra» de Camilo Pessanha, publicada em 1920, e assumiu depois a responsabilidade pelas edições aumentadas de 1945 e 1969. O espólio Pessanha conservado pela Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal inclui manuscritos, recortes e documentos reunidos por João de Castro Osório para a fixação e estudo da obra do poeta.

The Chinese text, arranged vertically, is printed on the left-hand pages, whilst the French translation, accompanied by commentary, is printed on the corresponding right-hand pages. It includes bibliographical indexes in Chinese characters, a table of chapters, a subject index and a list of names in French.

The 1913 edition of the second volume of Taoïsme, a series published by the Jesuit Léon Wieger during his missionary and intellectual work in China. Under the title Les Pères du système taoïste, it brings together annotated French translations of the three canonical texts traditionally attributed to Lao-tzu, Lie-tzu and Chuang-tzu.

The work opens with the authorisations from the Order, by Raphaël Gaudissart and Aemilio Becker, and the Imprimatur from H. Maquet, a Jesuit, Bishop of Amathont and Vicar Apostolic of Tche-li. This is followed by the preface, dated Hien-hien, 2 April 1913, in which Wieger sets out his historical and doctrinal interpretation of the texts. Next comes the Tao-tei-king, organised according to its traditional chapters; the Lie-tzeu, in eight books; and the Tchoang-tzeu, in thirty-three chapters. The extensive indexes at the end enable the reader to locate themes, characters, episodes and concepts, including the ‘Principle’, yin and yang, transformation, metempsychosis, nature, non-action, governance and a critique of conventionalism.

Of great importance for the study of the pioneering and fundamental works on Chinese culture produced by the Jesuits since the 16th century. Its value is further enhanced by the fact that this particular copy is of special interest due to its provenance from João de Castro Osório and the evidence of his active engagement with the text, as documented by the numerous annotations. The presence of this Sino-French treatise in his library, annotated on points relating to Taoist metaphysics, ethics and politics, constitutes material evidence of the range of reading interests of a publisher who played a decisive role in the posthumous dissemination of Pessanha’s work.

Léon Wieger (Strasbourg, 1856 – Beijing, 1933) was a doctor, a priest of the Society of Jesus and a missionary in China, where he devoted himself to the study, translation and dissemination of Chinese religious history, literature and intellectual traditions. Among other works, he published Histoire des croyances religieuses et des opinions philosophiques en Chine and the series Taoïsme. His translations retain documentary significance in the history of missionary sinology, although subsequent scholarship has revised several of his philological and doctrinal interpretations.

João de Castro Osório de Oliveira (Setúbal, 1899 – Lagoal, Caxias, 1970) was a poet, playwright, essayist and literary historian. The son of Ana de Castro Osório, whilst still a teenager he assisted with the preparation of the first edition of Camilo Pessanha’s Clepsidra, published in 1920, and later took charge of the expanded editions of 1945 and 1969. The Pessanha collection held by the National Library of Portugal includes manuscripts, clippings and documents gathered by João de Castro Osório for the preservation and study of the poet’s work.
