Through this international treaty Portugal became the first European nation to open its harbors to shipping and trade with Russia.

Referring to treaties between Portugal and Russia, see the work of Castro Brandão on the Portuguese foreign policy and defensive alliance with Russia in 1799, containing the historical study of the period, the study of draft changes to the original treaty with Russia; notes and comments to expressions suppressed, and the final version of the treaty as well as its secret and separate articles. And also see: William Rougle, The Luso-Russian Relations through the Eighteenth Century Portuguese Press, Academy of Sciences of Lisbon (1979, p. 85), which states that from 1751 onwards Portugal began to ask direct trade with Russia. In 1769 Russia established a Consulate General in Lisbon, and trade began in late 1770, mainly by interest from Portugal who needed war materials, iron, hemp, linen and wood, in exchange for Portuguese salt, wine, cotton, vegetable oil, and Brazilian indigo.
