Emoldurada em moldura da época em madeira (espessura: 6 cm) com aplicações de finos gessos geométricos e dourados, no estilo neo-clássico.

Apresenta um rótulo comercial original da empresa de fotografia Lazarus colocado nas costas da moldura com o seguinte anúncio: «J. & M. Lazarus - Photographia Inglesa. Retratos Artísticos, Ampliações, Pinturas. Grande sortido de molduras e passepartouts de nosso fabrico e das melhores procedências estrangeiras. Douradores e fabricantes de baguetes e molduras. Passepartouts em todos os géneros. Rua Ivens, 59 e Calçada do Combro, 30 A, 1º Dto. Tel. central 2567 e 1016. Lisboa.»

A fotografia dita retocada forma uma arte distinta e autónoma situada entre a fotografia e a pintura. Os últimos retocadores a cores tiveram a sua actividade extinta no final do século XX com o advento da fotografia digital.

A presente obra dos fotógrafos Lazarus, magnifica pintura a óleo sobre fotografia, em moldura dourada de madeira e gesso finamente trabalhada, é um magnífico e invulgar exemplo da combinação numa só peça das várias técnicas desenvolvidas pelo atelier dos irmãos Lazarus; Fotografia, pintura e moldura. É um exemplo máximo da mestria do ofício artístico de retocador fotográfico.

Os fotógrafos ingleses Joseph e Mauricius Lazarus tiveram actividade comercial em Moçambique no período de 1899-1908, e posteriormente, nos 30 anos seguintes, em Lisboa, produzindo fotografias e postais coloridos da mais elevada qualidade gráfica do seu tempo.

« J. & M. Lazarus [Lisboa, Beira e Lourenço Marques, actual cidade de Maputo, Moçambique] donos da melhor casa de fotografia de Lourenço Marques aquando da visita do Príncipe Real D. Luiz Filipe, em 1907. J. Lazarus teve também estúdio em seu nome, activo já em 1899, quer em Lourenço Marques, quer em Barberton, na República do Transvaal. O Governador Geral Conselheiro Freire de Andrade, encarrega os Lazarus das reportagens oficiais da visita do Príncipe Real, de que virão a publicar imagens em periódicos como o Brasil-Portugal. Bem sucedidos os Lazarus aproveitam contactos para abrir em Lisboa a Photographia Ingleza, em 1909, na Rua Ivens, nº 59 [no Chiado, a poucos metros Livraria Sá da Costa] já no Reinado de Dom Manuel II, que aí se fez fotografar com o seu vistoso uniforme de Lanceiros. [Os Lazarus] utilizaram durante anos e em plena República o título de fotógrafos da Casa Real e ainda nos anos 40 assinavam fotografias de D. Duarte Nuno [o Duque de Bragança]».

Contemporary wooden frame (thickness: 6 cm) with application of fine golden geometrical plaster, much to the neo-classic style.

It has an original commercial sticker of Lazarus Photography Company glued in the back of the frame with the following statement [translation in current English]:

“J. & M. Lazarus – English Photography. Artistic Portraits, Large Scale Photographs, Paintings. Wide range of frames and passe-partouts, both manufactured by us and from the best foreign origins. Gilders and manufacturers of mouldings and frames. All types of Passe-partouts. Rua Ivens, 59 and Calçada do Combro, 30 A, 1º Dto. Telephone: 2567 and 1016. Lisbon.”

The retouched photography is a distinct and separate form of art, which can be placed between photography and painting.

The last retouching masters saw their activity extinguished by the end of the 20th century with the onset of digital.

This work, a magnificent artistic oil painting over a photograph in a gilt sculpted original frame manufactered by them (neo classic style), combines the several types of techniques used and manufactered by the Lazarus brothers Atelier: Photo, painting and framing.

The English photographers Joseph and Mauricius Lazarus started their commercial activity in Mozambique from 1899 to 1908 and after that, for the next 30 years, in Lisbon, producing colour photographs and postcard of the highest graphic quality at the time.

About the Lazarus photographers, in “História da Imagem Fotográfica em Portugal – 1839-1997” de António Sena, Porto Editora, 1998, pp. 148:

“J. & M. Lazarus [Lisbon, Beira and Lourenço Marques, now Maputo, Mozambique] owners of the best photography store in Lourenço Marques at the time of the visit of His Royal Highness Prince D. Luiz Filipe, in 1907. J. Lazarus also had a studio in his own name, already active in 1899, both in Lourenço Marques and in Barberton, Transvaal. Freire de Andrade, General Governor appoints the Lazarus to do the official photographic cover of the visit of His Royal Highness the Prince, appearing the photos in publications like Brasil-Portugal. As successful business men and photographers, Lazarus take advantage of their connections and open in 1909 in Lisbon the Photographia Ingleza, located in Rua Ivens, nº 59 [in Chiado, a few meters away from Livraria Sá da Costa]. This was already during the reign of king Manuel II, who had his picture taken there wearing his ye-catching Lancer’s uniform. [The Lazarus] used for years the title of photographers appointed by his Majesty the King, even during the Republic, and in the 1940s signed pictures of D. Duarte Nuno [the heir to the throne of Portugal]”.
