This is a very rare first edition in Castilian of this classic work of Western culture, a true source for the history of mankind, originally written in Aramaic or Hebrew, then translated into Greek, and from Greek into Latin.

The author, Flavius Josephus, was a famous Roman historian, of Jewish origin. This first translation into Castilian was made by Alonso de Palencia, who was the chronicler of the queen of Castile, Isabella the Catholic, (to whom he dedicated this translation).

On the same year, and during the reign of the Catholic Monarchs, several events took place that changed the Iberian Peninsula and the world: Christopher Columbus arrived to the Americas; the Jewish were expelled from Spain; and Granada was conquered to the Moors after a 10 year war.

The two works of Flavius Josephus included in this incunable are:

- The Jewish Wars, in seven books, detail the first Jewish-Roman war, including a summary of the History of Israel, since the Maccabean Revolt in 167 BC, to the conquest and destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans, as well as the conquest of the last Judean fortresses like Masada in the year of 71 CE. These last facts were experienced by the author who, at that time, had already obtained the Roman citizenship.

- The work Against Apion was written in the year 95 CE to refute the anti-Semite position of the writer Apion, a Hellenized Egyptian from Alexandria, Greek professor, famous as master in Homer, and author of a work about the history of Egypt. Flavius Josephus exposes how deceitful were the ideas Apion was spreading in Rome.

In the words of Jacob Guinsburg, Against Apion is “one of his best literary achievements. Written with great conviction, it is a piece of passionate, yet authentic, defence. (...) contains, in the second part, a comprehensive effort of the conceptions of life and of the religious and legal traditions of the Jews, who, placed under the legislation revealed by Moses and the theocratic polis directly inspired in the commandments of God, found in their Torah the concepts that are also those of the most sage among the Greeks, with the added benefit of having been converted into procedures and religious practices, argues Flavius Josephus”.

Tito Flavius Josephus (Jerusalem, 37 - 100), was born Jewish and, after having been captured by the Romans, got the Roman citizenship, and served under the emperors Vespasian and Titus, standing out as a historian. He is the author of the following works: Jewish Wars (in seven books), written around 75 CE; Jewish Antiquities (in 20 books); Against Apion; On the Antiquity of the Jewish People; and Autobiography.

Flavius Josephus advocated the Jewish culture and its compliance with the Graeco-Roman thought. His work is a very important source for the study of Jewish history, culture, and religion, including extensive information on historical figures, social groups, traditions, and the geography of Palestine.

The translator, Alfonso Fernández de Palencia (Palencia (?), 1423 – Seville, (after) 1492) a Jewish, later converted to the Catholicism, was a remarkable intellectual of the first Spanish humanism. He was author of a large collection of works as historian, educator, geographer, lexicographer, and translator. He exercised great influence in the marriage and crowning of the monarchs Fernando and Isabella, having carried out diplomatic and political missions for the monarchs.

After his initial education within groups of Jewish converts, was a disciple of the humanist Alfonso de Cartagena, Bishop of Burgos; Basilios Bessarion; and of George of Trebizond in Italy, where he lived until 1453. In 1456 was nominated Royal Chronicler and Secretary of Latin Letters of King Henry the IV of Castile.

From his vast work, we highlight the Decades, written in Latin and inspired in the style of Livy, detailling the history of Spain from the reign of king John II of Castile until 1481; also the first dictionary of Latin-Spanish; the famous translations of Plutarch’s Parallel Lives; and the seven books of the Jewish Wars by Flavius Josephus.
