"Sir Robert Ker Porter, the author of this work, was born in 1777. He first came to public  note as an artist, one of his more famous works being a 120-foot panorama, "the "Stroming of Seringapatam". In 1804 he was appointed historical painter to the Czar of Russia. He accompained Sir John Moore throughout the Coruna campaigne, publishing his experiences in this book. He married a Russian princess in 1812, and on returning to England in 1813 published "A Narrative of the Campaigne in Russia, During the Year 1812". He was British consul in Venezuela from 1826 to 1841, and died at St. Petersburg in 1842."
