Atanazy Raczynski (1788 - 1874) foi um diplomata e aristocrata prussiano, membro da alta aristocracia da Grande Polónia.

Enquanto diplomata, visitou países, como Espanha, França, Itália, Suíça, Alemanha, e Portugal, e será durante as suas viagens que começará a publicar trabalhos de história da arte, tal como será em território nacional que se irá interessar pela arte portuguesa, interesse esse que se irá refletir nesta obra, concebida através de 28 cartas, demonstrando habilidade no seu trabalho como recolhedor de feitos, documentos e testemunhos históricos sobre obras e artistas.

Obra de referência e única no seu género. Inocêncio ii, 390: “Foi mister que um illustre e esclarecido estrangeiro, o Sr. Conde Raczynski viesse como que desenterrar do pó do esquecimento estes Monumentos Nacionaes, para nol-os dar traduzidos em Francez na sua interessante obra Les Arts en Portugal.”

Full leather bindings, with titles and gilt tooled on spines. Mottled edges in the second volume. Decorative endpapers. Illustrated with engravings in the text in the first volume and in hors-text, printed on folding paper, in the second volume.

Copy with light signs of handling on the binding and moisture stains on the leaves. First volume with leaf appended to front pastedown and underlining and marginal notes in pencil. Second volume with labels of Carlos Costa, Livraria Garrett and Papelaria Estevão Nunes & Filhos on the front pastedown, coeval handwritten ownership title on the fore-edge leaf, and preliminary loose unfolded hors-text.

Atanazy Raczynski (1788 - 1874) was a Prussian diplomat and aristocrat, a member of the high aristocracy of Greater Poland.

As a diplomat, he visited countries such as Spain, France, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, and Portugal, and it was during his travels that he begun to publish works of art history, just as it was on national territory that he took an interest in Portuguese art, an interest that was reflected in this work, conceived through 28 letters, demonstrating skill in his work as a collector of facts, documents and historical testimonies about works and artists.
