Este é uma obra em 5 partes, publicada inicialmente em dezanove fascículos entre fevereiro de 1838 e outubro de 1843. Teve a colaboração de vários autores, sob a direcção de Charles Darwin, que contribuiu por sua vez com descrições especializadas acerca das colecções que adquiriu ao longo da viagem do H.M.S. Beagle e com notas ao longo de todos os volumes.

A viagem realizou-se de 27 de dezembro de 1831 a 2 de outubro de 1836. Foi a segunda expedição científica da embarcação H.M.S. Beagle, sob o comando do capitão Robert FitzRoy, que convidou o recentemente licenciado Charles Darwin — com 22 anos e desejoso de conhecer os trópicos antes de se tornar pastor.

A expedição atravessou o Oceano Atlântico em rumo às costas do sul da América do Sul, onde se realizaram pormenorizados levantamentos hidrográficos, regressando pelo Taiti e pela Austrália, completando uma circum-navegação à Terra. Era previsto que durasse apenas dois anos, mas arrastou-se ao longo de cinco.

Com esta viagem, Darwin consagrou-se como geólogo e colecionador de fósseis de prestígio. Dela resultou a publicação da presente obra e do seu conhecido diário The Voyage of the Beagle. Ambas contribuíram largamente para o seu reconhecimento dentro da comunidade científica. As experiências e descobertas que realizou durante a expedição forneceram a base para as ideias que o levaram à elaboração da sua teoria da evolução por selecção natural.

Charles Robert Darwin (Shrewsbury, 1809 – Downe, 1882), foi um naturalista, geólogo e biólogo, célebre pela sua teoria da evolução e pelos avanços que realizou no campo das ciências biológicas. Estudou em Shrewsbury, na Universidade de Edimburgo e no Christ’s College, em Cambridge.

Work in five parts, initially published in nineteen fascicles between February 1838 and October 1843. It had the collaboration of several authors, under the direction of Charles Darwin, who in turn contributed specialised descriptions of the collections he had acquired during the journey of the H.M.S. Beagle and with notes throughout the volumes.

The voyage took place from 27 December 1831 to 2 October 1836. It was the second scientific expedition of the H.M.S. Beagle under the command of Captain Robert FitzRoy, who invited the recently graduated Charles Darwin - aged 22 and keen to get to know the tropics before becoming a pastor.

The expedition crossed the Atlantic Ocean towards the southern coasts of South America, where detailed hydrographic surveys were carried out, returning via Tahiti and Australia, completing a circumnavigation of the Earth. It was only supposed to last two years, but it took five.

With this trip, Darwin established himself as a prestigious geologist and fossil collector. It resulted in the publication of this book and his well-known diary The Voyage of the Beagle. Both contributed greatly to his recognition within the scientific community. The experiments and discoveries he made during the expedition provided the basis for the ideas that led him to develop his theory of evolution by natural selection.

Charles Robert Darwin (Shrewsbury, 1809 - Downe, 1882) was a naturalist, geologist and biologist, famous for his theory of evolution and the advances he made in the field of biological sciences. He studied in Shrewsbury, at the University of Edinburgh, and at the Christ’s College, in Cambridge.
