Retrato em plano de busto de D. Pedro II em moldura oval. Adornado com motivos florais, arquitectónicos e símbolos alegóricos, desde a coroa real e a esfera armilar, aos dois anjos com ramos de loureiro que ladeiam o retrato. A inscrição «D. Pedro II Imperador do Brasil.» em rodapé.

Exemplar com leves picos e manchas de humidade e rasgos à margem, com pequenas falhas de papel. Um dos rasgos atinge a gravura pela margem lateral direita.

Esta gravura pertence à acalamada edição de «Os Lusíadas» por Emílio Biel, que foi dedicada ao Imperador D.Pedro II do Brasil. Trata-se de uma edição crítica e comemorativa ilustrada que se destaca pela elevada qualidade tipográfica e artística e pelo cuidado no tratamento crítico do texto e pelos estudos que o acompanham.

Karl Emil Biel, conhecido por Emílio Biel (Annaberg, 1838 – Porto, 1915), foi um negociante, editor e acima de tudo um célebre e influente fotógrafo, pioneiro nos campos da fotografia e da fototipia em Portugal. Estabeleceu-se no Porto em 1860, com 22 anos.

Alfred Fillon (Roanne, 1825 – Lisboa, 1881), francês emigrado em Portugal por razões políticas, foi uma das figuras mais importantes da fotografia portuguesa de oitocentos. Fixando-se em Portugal na década de 1850, Fillon tornou o seu estabelecimento fotográfico num dos mais destacados estúdios portugueses e tornar-se-ia numa referência para as casas fotográficas portuguesas. Nele se fizeram fotografar as mais importantes figuras da sociedade portuguesa do seu tempo, em particular os membros da família real. A sua ligação aos meios teatrais, enquanto fotógrafo do Teatro Nacional, trouxe-lhe enorme prestígio e muitas das fotografias de artistas foram publicadas na revista O Contemporâneo. De acordo com várias informações, Fillon teve um estúdio na Rua Serpa Pinto, N.º 87, Lisboa.

Copy with slight damp stains and tears to the margins, with small paper flaws. One of the tears reaches the engraving on the right-hand side.
