In folio de 29,5x21,5 cm. Com [ii], 697, [i em br.] págs. Encadernação da época, inteira de pele com rótulo vermelho, nervos e ferros a ouro em casas fechadas.

Impressão muito nítida sobre papel de linho com caracteres redondos e alguns itálicos no índice dos capítulos, citações, sumários e títulos dos capítulos, com o texto disposto a duas colunas. Folha de rosto com as armas Reais de Portugal ao centro, com cabeções - no início do índice, no início da terceira parte e no início do índice de assuntos, iniciais decoradas e belos florões de remate - no fim do índice de capítulos, no fim do texto e no fim do índice de assuntos.

Exemplar com etiqueta triangular de biblioteca, na primeira casa da lombada, com o número 270 que era o da ordem da prateleira, como se vê pela cota completa inscrita a lápis vermelha na folha de guarda. Encadernação com desgastes superficiais e mais acentuados nos cantos.

Terceira edição muito rara desta obra. Foi publicada pela primeira vez em dois volumes - Olisipone, Apud Petrum Craesbeeck 1622 e 1625 e, segunda edição em Lugduni, [Leão de França] Apud Claudium Bourgeat, 1673.

As páginas preliminares contêm um índice de capítulos, a página 630 está em branco, as páginas 631 a 697, contêm um índice de assuntos.

Obra muito importante para o estudo sobre as problemáticas questões das relações entre a Igreja Católica e o exercício do poder pelos reis, que continuou a preocupar os políticos e os teólogos nas épocas posteriores e mesmo durante a República.

Gabriel Pereira de Castro defende uma forma acentuada de regalismo, ou seja, que o Poder Real não se deve submeter aos Papas e os eclesiásticos não devem usufruir de isenções especiais, mas serem abrangidos pelas mesmas leis que todos os outros súbditos. Por esse motivo a obra foi proibida em Roma, por decreto da Congregação do Index de 26 de Outubro de 1640, foi incluída no Index Librorum Prohibitorum de Outubro de 1640 e no Index Librorum prohibitorum SS. D. N. Pii Sexti jussu editus: Romae, 1787, pág. 201. Camenietzki (2018:18) sustenta que De Manu Regia, é de facto uma obra de combate às proposições do Padre Francisco Suárez.

O autor sustentou uma polémica, em 1614, sobre os mesmos temas, com Francisco Suarez, que só seria publicada, em 1738, com o título de - Monomachia sobre as Concórdias que os Reis Fizeram com os Prelados de Portugal, por ocasião de um conflito entre o Rei D. João V e o Papa Clemente XII.

Gabriel Pereira de Castro (Braga, 1571 - Lisboa, 1632), jurista e poeta português, foi Cavaleiro da Ordem de Cristo, Doutor em Direito Canónico, Lente na Universidade de Coimbra, Desembargador da Relação do Porto, da Casa da Supplicação de Lisboa, Corregedor do Crime da Corte, Procurador-geral das Ordens Militares, e Chanceler-Mór do Reino.

É autor de importantes obras sobre direito, tais como: Decisiones Supremi, Eminentissimeque Senatus Portugalliae Lisboa, 1621; Monomachia sobre as Concórdias que os Reis Fizeram com os Prelados de Portugal, Lisboa, 1738. Como poeta publicou o magnífico poema épico Ulisseia, 1636, com edições em 1643, 1745, 1826, 1827, 2016.

Deixou manuscritas poesias líricas e o original com adições e correcções do seu poema épico.

Very clear printing on linen paper with round characters and some italics in the chapter index, quotations, summaries and chapter titles, with the text arranged in two columns. Title page with the Royal Arms of Portugal in the centre, with headpieces - at the beginning of the table of contents, at the beginning of the third part and at the beginning of the subject index, decorated initials and beautiful finishing fleurons - at the end of the chapter index, at the end of the text and at the end of the subject index.

Copy with a triangular library label in the first panel on the spine, with the number 270, which was the order of the shelf, as can be seen from the full quota inscribed in red pencil on the title page. Binding with superficial flaws, and more pronounced wear at the corners.

Very rare third edition of this work. It was first published in two volumes - Olisipone, Apud Petrum Craesbeeck 1622 and 1625 and, second edition in Lugduni, [Lion of France] Apud Claudium Bourgeat, 1673.

The preliminary pages contain a chapter index, page 630 is blank, pages 631 to 697 have a table of contents.

Very important work for the study of the problematic issues of relations between the Catholic Church and the exercise of power by kings, which continued to preoccupy politicians and theologians in later times and even during the Republic.

Gabriel Pereira de Castro defended an accentuated form of regalism, i.e. that the Royal Power should not be subject to the Popes and ecclesiastics should not enjoy special exemptions, but be covered by the same laws as all other subjects. For this reason, the work was banned in Rome by decree of the Congregation of the Index of 26 October 1640, and was included in the Index Librorum Prohibitorum of October 1640 and in the Index Librorum prohibitorum SS. D. N. Pii Sexti jussu editus: Romae, 1787, p. 201. Camenietzki (2018:18) argues that De Manu Regia, is in fact a work combating the propositions of Francisco Suárez.

The author held a polemic in 1614 on the same themes with Francisco Suarez, which would only be published in 1738 under the title - Monomachia sobre as Concórdias que os Reis Fizeram com os Prelados de Portugal, on the occasion of a conflict between King João V and Pope Clement XII.

Gabriel Pereira de Castro (Braga, 1571 - Lisbon, 1632), Portuguese jurist and poet, was a Knight of the Order of Christ, Doctor of Canon Law, Lecturer at the University of Coimbra, Judge of the Porto Court of Appeal, of the Lisbon House of Supplication, Corregedor (Inspector-General or Magistrate) of the Crime in Court, Procurator-General of the Military Orders, and Chancellor-General of the Kingdom.

He is the author of important works on law, such as: Decisiones Supremi, Eminentissimeque Senatus Portugalliae Lisboa, 1621; Monomachia sobre as Concórdias que os Reis Fizeram com os Prelados de Portugal, Lisboa, 1738. As a poet he published the magnificent epic poem Ulisseia, 1636, with editions in 1643, 1745, 1826, 1827, 2016.

He left handwritten lyrical poems and the original with additions and corrections.
