In fólio de 26x19 cm. Com [viii] fólios. Encadernação do século XVII inteira de pele, com nervos e ferros a ouro na lombada e com ferros a seco formando duas esquadrias com motivos vegetalistas e geométricos delimitadas por filetes triplos.

Belos trabalhos tipográficos quinhentistas, realizados pelo impressor António Gonçalves, que imprimiu a primeira edição dos Lusíadas. Folhas de rosto de cada uma das obras, com o brasão de D. Sebastião, enquadrado por uma composição com volutas, flores e tarjas, ocupando toda a parte central das folhas.

Impressão muito nítida com iniciais decoradas ao longo da primeira obra e com belas iniciais historiadas no Privilégio real, e no início de cada uma das cinco partes, que a constituem (fl. 1, 73, 91, 111 e 179). Índice impresso a duas colunas.

Exemplar da primeira obra com a folha de rosto, manchada, com faltas de papel marginais e reforçada com tiras de papel, que afectam o texto do verso, sem impedir a leitura. Com pequenos picos de traça no canto inferior das primeiras folhas até ao fólio 8, no canto inferior das últimas folhas desde o fólio 187 ao fim e na margem das folhas desde o fólio 13 sem numeração do índice até ao fim, que passa para a segunda obra, que por sua vez apresenta um pequeno pico de traça no pé das folhas. Folha 48 com um rasgão restaurado com dois reforços e folhas 92 a 98 com as margens reforçadas. Com diversas manchas de humidade, em especial nas primeiras folhas e no canto superior de todas as folhas. Com excepção da folha de rosto os defeitos não afectam o texto. A folha 108 está colocada depois da 109.

Com rubricas em letra coeva na folha de rosto e enriquecido com anotações marginais manuscritas da época. No verso da última folha da segunda obra tem uma receita manuscrita em letra coeva e a assinatura de Julião Rodrigues da Costa.

Primeira edição desta obra raríssima e muito importante para o estudo da história do direito e da legislação. Foi publicada segunda edição em 1796.

Contêm um vasto repositório das leis que não estavam incluídas nas Ordenações Afonsinas e Manuelinas, que foram reunidas pelo Doutor Duarte Nunes de Leão, influente jurista do século XVI, por ordem do Cardeal D. Henrique, regente na menoridade de D. Sebastião. Na Quarta Parte, no fólio 121, verso e seguintes, estão transcritas, as leis antijudaicas e antimuçulmanas, com referência às fontes originais.

A primeira parte reúne legislação relativa aos ofícios e aos regimentos dos oficiais; a segunda sobre jurisdições e privilégios; a terceira integra legislação sobre questões judiciais; a quarta reúne legislação sobre os delitos e questões a eles acessórias; a quinta parte inclui legislação sobre o que pertence à fazenda do Rei; e a sexta parte é sobre casos extraordinários. Contêm uma Adição, que entre outras coisas inclui o regimento dos vedores das éguas; na frente da folha 218 apresenta um [Aviso] Aos Leitores sobre as fontes de onde foram trasladadas as leis e uma errata, com o verso em branco. As dezasseis folhas sem numeração contêm um índice de assuntos. A segunda obra contém um prólogo do autor no verso da folha de rosto.

Duarte Nunes de Leão, ou do Leão (Évora, 1530 - Lisboa, 1608) foi um jurista, filólogo e historiador português de origem judaica. Formou-se em Direito pela Universidade de Coimbra, desempenhando mais tarde o cargo de juiz desembargador da Casa da Suplicação. Defendeu a anexação de Portugal por Castela, mas foi depois mal recompensado pelos governantes filipinos, que lhe moveram ou deixaram mover perseguições, explicáveis pelo anti-semitismo da época.

A sua obra cobre fundamentalmente três áreas: o Direito, a História e a Linguística. Nunes de Leão foi o autor, entre muitas obras publicadas e não publicadas, da 'Crónica dos Reis de Portugal, Lvsitani Censvrae in Libellvm de Regvm Portvgaliae Origine', sobre a origem genealógica e a história dos reis de Portugal, na qual analisa várias fontes, referindo e refutando as versões mais hipotéticas da história de Portugal e da 'Origem, e Orthographia da Lingoa Portugueza', obra ainda hoje inovadora. Publicou estudos pioneiros sobre o nosso idioma e é considerado o fundador dos estudos ortográficos. Sabe-se ainda da existência de outros escritos, nomeadamente nos domínios da lexicologia e da etimologia, que contudo se perderam.

Coligindo as palavras do seu sobrinho, Duarte Nunes de Leão não se contentou em ser um dos mais eminentes do seu tempo na área do Direito Civil e Canónico, tendo abraçado outras ciências. Foi um notável erudito na história antiga e moderna, sendo por seu engenho e estudo, capaz de toda a ciência digna de homem. Assim, Nunes de Leão não somente se dedicou à composição das ordenações e leis do reino de Portugal, com muita satisfação do Rei e por seu mandado, mas também por honra de Portugal escreveu a sua história.

A beautiful 1500’s print illustrated with the coat of arms of the Royal House (D.Sebastião) and beautiful historiated capital letters. Index printed in two columns. The “Anotações” [Annotations] have their own frontispiece with the same coat of arms. The signature of the author is print at the end of the last folio.

Very clear printing with decorated initials throughout the first work and with beautiful historiated initials in the Royal Privilege, and at the beginning of each of the five parts that make it up (fl. 1, 73, 91, 111 and 179). Index printed in two columns.

Copy of the first work with the title page stained, with marginal paper faults and reinforced with strips of paper, which affect the text on the verso, without preventing reading. With small moth holes on the bottom corner of the first leaves up to folio 8, on the bottom corner of the last leaves from folio 187 to the end and on the margin of the leaves from folio 13 without index numbering to the end, which moves on to the second work, which in turn has a small moth hole at the foot of the leaves. Sheet 48 with a restored tear with two reinforcements and sheets 92 to 98 with reinforced margins. With various damp stains, especially on the first few leaves and the top corner of all the leaves. With the exception of the title page, the defects do not affect the text. Sheet 108 is placed after sheet 109.

With initialing in coeval handwriting on the title page and enriched with contemporary handwritten marginal notes. On the back of the last leaf of the second work there is a handwritten recipe in coeval handwriting and the signature of Julião Rodrigues da Costa.

First edition of this very rare and very important work for the study of the history of law and legislation. A second edition was published in 1796.

It contains a vast repository of laws that were not included in the Afonsinas and Manuelinas Ordinances, which were assembled by Dr Duarte Nunes de Leão, an influential 16th century jurist, by order of Cardinal Henrique, regent during the minority of King Sebastião. In the Fourth Part, on folio 121, verso and following, the anti-Jewish and anti-Muslim laws are transcribed, with reference to the original sources.

The first part brings together legislation on the offices and regiments of officials; the second on jurisdictions and privileges; the third includes legislation on judicial matters; the fourth brings together legislation on offences and matters ancillary to them; the fifth part includes legislation on what belongs to the King's treasury; and the sixth part is on extraordinary cases. They contain an Addition, which among other things includes the regiment of the sellers of mares; on the front of sheet 218 there is a [Notice] to Readers about the sources from which the laws were transferred and an errata, with the back blank. The sixteen unnumbered pages contain an index of subjects. The second work contains a prologue by the author on the back of the title page.

Duarte Nunes de Leão, or do Leão (Évora, 1530 - Lisbon, 1608) was a Portuguese lawyer, philologist and and historian of jewish origin. He got is law degree at the University of Coimbra, later becoming judge at the “Casa da Suplicação”. He defended that Portugal should be rulled by Castilia, but was badly rewarded by the kings of Spain who persecuted him due to the anti-Semitism exiting at the time.

His work covers three main areas: Law, History, and Linguistics. Among many published and unpublished works, Nunes de Leão authored: the 'Crónica dos Reis de Portugal, Lvsitani Censvrae in Libellvm de Regvm Portvgaliae Origine', about the genealogic origin and the history of the kings of Portugal, where he analyses several sources, mentioning and refuting the most hypothetical versions of the History of Portugal; the 'Origem, e Orthographia da Lingoa Portugueza' [Origins and orthography of the Portuguese Language] which is today still an innovative work. He published pioneer studies on the Portuguese language and is considered the founder of orthographic studies. There were also other works, mainly about lexicology and etymology that were, however, lost.

According to his nephew, Duarte Nunes de Leão did not settle to be one of the most important figures of Civil and Canon Law at the, having embraced other sciences. It was a notable scholar in Ancient and Modern History, being able, on his own resourcefulness and studies, of all science worthy of men. Thus, Nunes de Leão not only has he dedicated himself to compile the ordinances and laws of the kingdom of Portugal, pleasing the king and mandated by him, but also in honour of Portugal, he has written its history .
