Ilustrado com uma gravura xilográfica na folha de rosto representando dois jogadores de xadrez, pequenas gravuras no texto com as diferentes peças que compõem o jogo e 92 gravuras intercaladas no texto, representado o tabuleiro com diferentes jogadas.

Obra escrita em italiano e castelhano.

Impressão em caracteres góticos rotundos, com exceção da folha de rosto que é impressa com caracteres rotundos.

Exemplar um pouco aparado à cabeça e com leves manchas de humidade na folha de rosto.

Proveniência: exemplar com ex-libris heráldico “The Right Hon. Charles Lord Halifax 1720, no verso da folha de rosto e selo em branco de Luiz Sarrea. Na folha guarda anterior etiqueta comercial “Paris en vente chez Jean Preti. Trata-se de uma das raríssimas cinco edições publicadas sem nome de autor, impressor ou data, distingue-se das outras por ser a única impressa em gótico. A primeira edição publicou-se em Roma no ano de 1512.

Pedro Damião de Odemira, de quem ao certo muito pouco sabemos, era ao que parece Boticário em Odemira e refugiou-se em Roma, aquando da expulsão dos judeus de Portugal no tempo de D. Manuel I. Foi o primeiro autor a compor um tratado de iniciação ao xadrez.

A obra contem um capítulo sobre jogar xadrez com os olhos vendados. Famoso em toda a Europa, foi convidado das principais cortes europeias para exibir os seus dotes de xadrezista, sendo o jogo do xadrez na sua época considerado digno de ser praticado pela nobreza.

Illustrated with a xylographic engraving on the cover representing two chess players, small engravings in the text with the different pieces that make up the game and 92 engravings interspersed in the text, representing the board with different moves.

Work written in Italian and Spanish. Printed in Gothic rotund characters, except the title page that is printed with rotund characters.

Copy slightly trimmed at the head and with slight damp stains on the title page.

Provenance: ex-libris copy with heraldic 'The Right Hon Charles Lord Halifax 1720, on the back of the title page and blank stamp Luiz Sarrea. Commercial label 'Paris en vente chez Jean Preti in previous leaf guard.

This is one of the rare five editions published without author name, date or printer. Distinguishes itself from the others by being the only printed in Gothic. The first edition was published in Rome in the year 1512.

Peter Damian Odemira, of whom very little is known, is supposed to have been Apothecary in Odemira and took refuge in Rome, when the Jews were expelled from Portugal during the reign of D. Manuel I. It was the first author to write a treatise about initiation to chess. The book contains a chapter about playing chess blindfolded. Famous throughout Europe, he was invited by the major European royal courts to display his talents as chess player. The game of chess at the time time was considered worthy of being practiced by the nobility.
