Olav Manson,cujo nome foi posteriormente latinizado para Olaus Magnus. Depois de ter completado seus estudos superiores em Rostock, na Alemanha, fez em 1518 uma longa viagem como legado papal ao norte da Suécia, visitando as suas pequenas comunidades cristãs da época, imersas num ambiente ainda essencialmente pagão. Posteriormente serviu como secretário de seu irmão mais velho John, o Grande, arcebispo de Uppsala e embaixador na Suécia. Em 1523 foi incluído uma missão pelo rei Gustav Vasa a Itália e desde então, devido à afirmação gradual da Reforma Luterana na Suécia, não retornou ao seu país. Entre 1529-1539 viveu com seu irmão em Gdansk, e em seguida mudou-se para Veneza. Em 1544 foi nomeado arcebispo de Uppsala, mas não conseguiu tomar posse. Como primaz da Suécia no exílio participou activamente do Concílio de Trento. As obras de Olaus Magnus espalharam no sul da Europa o conhecimento dos países escandinavos.

A Historia de Gentibus, em vinte e dois livros, incluí a narração de alguns episódios históricos, tomadas principalmente a partir do Saxon Gramático, sendo o tema principal a descrição dos costumes, das crenças e das instituições dos suecos e dos povos nórdicos. Obra com um capítulo a pesca do bacalhau.

Olav Manson had his name later Latinized to Olaus Magnus. After completing his higher studies in Rostock, Germany, in 1518 he made a long journey as a papal legate to the north of Sweden, visiting its small Christian communities of the time, immersed in an environment still essentially pagan. Later served as secretary of his older brother John, the Great, Archbishop of Uppsala and ambassador in Sweden. In 1523 he was appointed in a mission by King Gustav Vasa to Italy, and since then, due to the Lutheran Reformation in Sweden, he did not return to his country. Between 1529 - 1539 he lived with his brother in Gdansk, and then moved to Venice. In 1544 he was appointed Archbishop of Uppsala, but failed to take hold. As head of the Catholic of Sweden in exile he actively participated in the Council of Trent. The works of Olaus Magnus spread in southern Europe the knowledge of the Scandinavian countries.

This «History of Gentibus», in twenty-two books, included the narration of some historical episodes (mostly taken from the Saxon Gramaticum) and the main theme of the book is the description of customs, beliefs and institutions of Swedish and Nordic peoples. Work with a chapter on cod fishing.
