First Edition of the English Translation by Joseph Trapp, who has appended a translation (also the first in English) of M. Brunel's memoir on the China trade (pp. 415-75). Rochon was appointed astronomer of the marine in 1766, and two years later was sent to the East Indies to conduct a hydrographic survey of the Indian Ocean. His account of Madagascar was written with a view to showing the advantages which might be derived from French settlements there. A list of trees, shrubs, and plants grown in the northern part of the island is given on pp. 349-80.
