 The author was an officer in the Corps of Engineers. The Preface observes that, prior to the publication of this book, not a single work on sieges existed in the English language. Jones sets out to explain the reasons why such a skilful general as Wellington with the bravest troops in the world, with excellent artillery and highly respected engineers, was unable to conduct his siehes with the same degree of success and inconsiderable loss of life, as did the ordinary generals of the French army.
