“A nautical dictionary enabling seafaringmen, when in foreign countries to find out the proper terms for professional things, must certainly not only prove useful, but in many intances be even necessary to prevent misunderstanding of more or less consequence, the more so as many such terms are very often wanting in common dictionaries, while others cannot be found without a troublesome search. This book contains the denominations of all parts and partitions of ships and craft, most accurately defined in the following ten languages, viz: Danish, Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Swedish. The Greek has been omitted to avoid an unnecessary increase of this work, the difference between Greek and Italian Sea terms being trifling and the latter being generally understood by mariners in the Mediterranean. Some terms, frequently ocurring to seamen, are noted after Fig. 42 pag. 30. After Fig. 68 Pag. 32. Will be found the names of such vessels and craft, wich differ in several languages. Pag. 35 contains the dimensions of vessels and boats mentioned in this book. Nine engravings in steel accompany this vocabulary for referring by figures to the objects therein mentioned. Three coloured plates [missing] exhibit the flags of all nations, as complete as they could be procured accompanied by proper explanations. At the end of the dictionary are alphabetic Indexes in the above mentioned languages in which some repetitions will prevent a tedions searching of words. The Russian index is preceded by an alphabet with the names and pronunciation of letters. The pronunciation of the Russian words is annexed in German. The author having been guided only by pratical and scientific considerations, indulges the hope, that this difficult and tedious undertaking may be looked on as an important step in this part of nautical science”.
