Folha de rosto com a marca do célebre impressor e cartógrafo Johannes Blaeu, com a legenda: Indefessus Agendo [Trabalhando sem descanso] por baixo de uma esfera armilar ladeada pelas figuras do Tempo e de Hércules. Impressão muito nítida em pequenos caracteres redondos, com caracteres itálicos na dedicatória ornamentada com iniciais decoradas e e florões de remate.

Exemplar com desgaste na encadernação nas margens das pastas e nos cantos e perda de pergaminho no canto superior da pasta anterior. Com cotas de biblioteca manuscritas em letra coeva na folha de guarada anterior; com pico de traça desde a página 91 até ao fim do volume, ao nível das linhas 30 e 31 de cada página, atingindo o texto, dificultando a leitura, desde a página 381 e impedindo a leitura entre as páginas 390 e 439; e com um pequeno furo causado por queimadura nas páginas 215 a 216, tendo o texto reconstituído à margem em letra coeva.

Obra muito rara e importante para o estudo dos desenvolvimentos do humanismo na Holanda Protestante do século XVII, e para vários aspectos da sua história e cultura, nomeadamente as prolongadas guerras com Espanha, (que tinha o mesmo rei que Portugal). D. Francisco Manuel de Melo participou na Batalha das Dunas e escreveu uma descrição muito célebre desse confronto naval que é igualmente descrito por Barleu na obra contida neste livro referida abaixo.

A obra contém 18 orações, entre as quais se contam algumas das suas obras mais célebre tais como: uma descrição da chegada e Amsterdão e da respectiva entrada triunfal na cidade, em 1638, pela Rainha de França, Maria de Medici com o título - Medicea Hospes; o Mercator Sapiens - o Mercador Sábio; Bom príncipe, contra Maquiavel; Orações panegíricas em louvor de generais e nobres holandeses, que se destinguiram na guerra contra Espanha, tais como Almirante Martin Tromp, que derrotou uma armada Espanhola na Batalha Naval das Dunas; oração em louvor da Rainha da Grâ Bretanha e da sua filha Maria, que se ia casar com o príncipe Frederico Henrique. Inclui também duas orações de consolação de pessoas que perderam os pais e um filho, uma oraçâo por ocasião de um casamento, dois textos sobre métodos para educar e para estudar, e duas orações sobre assuntos religiosos - De Praesepi Christi e De Cruce Christi.

Gaspar Barléu (Antuérpia 1584 - Amsterdão 1648) teólogo, humanista, poeta, tradutor e historiador holandês. Estudou e foi professor de lógica na Universidade de Leiden até 1619. Depois de estudar medicina, que não chegou a exercer, tornou-se professor de filosofia no Athenaeum de Amesterdão. Escreveu poesias em latim recolhidas nas obras: Hymnus ad Christum, 1628 e Poemata, do mesmo ano. Escreveu textos para obras de geografia impressas por Johannes Blaeu, incluindo uma muito importante sobre os Holandeses no Brasil - Rerum per Octennium in Brasília et alibi nuper gestarum, Sub Praefectura Illustrissimi Comitis I. Mauritti... Amaterdão, 1647. Como tradutor publicou, em 1622, a tradução em holandês da obra de António de Herrera - Descrição das Índias Ocidentais.

Very crisp printing in small round characters, with italic characters in the dedication ornamented with decorated initials and and finishing fleurons.

Copy with signs of wear on the binding at edges of folders and corners and loss of parchment at top corner of front board. With handwritten library quotations in coeval handwriting on the front flyleaf; with moth holes from page 91 to the end of the volume, at the level of lines 30 and 31 of each page, reaching the text, making reading difficult, from page 381 and preventing reading between pages 390 and 439; and with a small hole caused by burning on pages 215 to 216, the text having been reconstituted in the margin in coeval handwriting.

Very rare and important work for the study of the developments of humanism in 17th century Protestant Holland, and for various aspects of its history and culture, notably the protracted wars with Spain, (which had the same king as Portugal). D. Francisco Manuel de Melo participated in the Battle of Dunes and wrote a very famous description of this naval confrontation which is also described by Barleus in the work contained in this book referred to below.

The work contains 18 orations, among which are some of his most celebrated works such as: a description of the arrival and Amsterdam and the respective triumphal entry into the city in 1638 by the Queen of France, Maria de Medici with the title - Medicea Hospes; the Mercator Sapiens - the Wise Merchant; Good Prince, against Machiavelli; Panegyric prayers in praise of Dutch generals and noblemen, who distinguished themselves in the war against Spain, such as Admiral Martin Tromp, who defeated a Spanish armada at the Naval Battle of the Dunes; prayer in praise of the Queen of Brittany and her daughter Mary, who was to marry Prince Frederick Henry. It also includes two prayers of consolation for people who have lost parents and a child, a prayer on the occasion of a wedding, two texts on methods for educating and for studying, and two prayers on religious matters - De Praesepi Christi and De Cruce Christi.

Gaspar Barléu (Casper Barleus) (Antwerp 1584 - Amsterdam 1648) Dutch theologian, humanist, poet, translator and historian. He studied and was professor of logic at Leiden University until 1619. After studying medicine, which he did not practice, he became professor of philosophy at the Athenaeum in Amsterdam. He wrote Latin poetry collected in the works: Hymnus ad Christum, 1628 and Poemata, of the same year. He wrote texts for works of geography printed by Johannes Blaeu, including a very important one about the Dutch in Brazil - Rerum per Octennium in Brasília et alibi nuper gestarum, Sub Praefectura Illustrissimi Comitis I. Mauritti. Amaterdam, 1647. As a translator he published, in 1622, the Dutch translation of Antonio de Herrera's work - Description of the West Indies.
